My brother shot a deer today in the shoulder, deer rared straight up fell back. Deer lost balance but caught it right before he fell to the ground. Turned 180 degrees behind cedar tree no blood to find. Backed out after good search hope to find in the morning. Whats are chances of finding him. anyone have any experience with something like this? Deer was shot with 308 168 gr.

If he hit the deer in any vitals with the 308 you all will find it in the am. Almost sounds like a brisket shot. That is the only time that I have heard of them rearing up backwards. In my experience. Gut shot usually hunker up and bow their back. If it is a brisket shot then it may not be an immediate mortal wound.
And I could completely wrong. Tell him to cross his fingers and pray for the best.
Good luck in the am

no telling what you'll find in the morning, just do a diligent job of searching. If you can track a blood trail go after it, but if there isn't enough blood to follow that doesn't mean he isn't dead. Spread out and walk grids, if you mortally wounded the deer it won't be that far, probably less than 300 yards, judging from your description of the situation. Just give him every opportunity to find him, don't give up after an hour.

I tried the "high shoulder" shot for first time with my 6.8. Same thing happened, reared back i thought it fell back. Couldnt find it. Not knocking shoulder shot, i may have hit high. Plus the ammo said i was 2 inches high at 100 yds. Depends if you hit to high, but a 308 should put him down.

how's the search going? I'm hoping y'all are on to him if you haven't already located him dead. Good luck and search diligently.

Get a tracker with a good dog. IMO, we owe it to the animals we hunt.

Check up in those cedars real well. You could walk right by and never see him. The last 3 bucks I've killed somehow ended way up under a cedar. The one I killed before thanksgiving was hit towards the front of the shoulder and bolted leaving no blood. Fortunately we found him about 80-100 yards away, DEEP in the cedar..I just happened to look well enough under the right tree

well no luck in finding him as of this point. Have put in 4.5 hrs no blood. It is a heavy pig area. There really nothing to put a dog on, too many tracks and torn up ground sand did not a low for tracking very well. Will keep looking.

An experienced tracking dog will ignor the hogs and stay on the blood trail the handler puts him on.

Go look around your water sources if you have any on the property.

I have had a deer do the same thing accept, he fell down and could not get back up. He survived for less than a minute in that condition. Hope that helps a little and good luck!!
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.

Keep looking
I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

What bullet was he shooting? No hair or any sign of hit? I lost one a few years back under similar circumstances and it still bothers me. Hope you find him.
Congrats on retirement. Are you hunting with Randy or another brother?

If you didnt hit high glancing bones your deer is dead somewhere. Ive lost a few myself. Hit that high shoulder just right or spine and you can get a glance sometimes. Also a stand up shot can be a heart or gut shot. Ived killed a bunch and lost some too. Ive seen all reactions. Let us know. Check your creeks, ponds, or steep draws. They run out of power in low areas. It may end up being a big black bird hunt. Good luck.

If yall pushed the buck and it was hit. It will go several hundred yards. A friend of mine chased a bow shot buck around. Found it alive over a mile away with almost perfect shot placement. Must of threaded the vidals. They ran it down with buck shot. No matter how perfect folks may act,Losing or wounding deer just happens sometimes if you hunt enough.

Look near the water sources. Injured animals drink lots of water if they can.

A million visions go through your head when you cant find a deer you know you hit. I got the bullet thing the first time I read this. Doesnt matter what twinkle toes was shot with. When he stands up from a soft zipp through his gut or heart with no real bone structure damage you wont get alot of anything in the name of blood sometimes. The .308 is a perfect deer gun, it just needs good practice for the subject. My use of the .308 use is 10 out of 11. One high shoulder loss. Paralized the deer temporary and walked off 700yrds to the next door pond. 180 in. Lost but found by a land barron. Rib shots can be low blood output shots. Depends what you did and didnt hit. He stood up and laced up and ran for his life. Its tough.
