Not many deer being seen on property. Have not seen like this before, so few deer. Got this guy Wed. morning. 10 point with 20" spread. Beginning to think he was running all the other deer off. Had one broken tine and scars on his back from fighting. Wondering if any other members have seen a deer like this in Madison County. This is the biggest buck I have ever seen there.
He's a perfect stranger like a cross of himself and a fox. He's a feeling arranger and a changer of the ways he talks. He's the unforeseen danger and the keeper of the key to the locks.

XMTG; sorry but did not take any other pictures. I am having a European mount made and can post results later though. Deerhunter61; The upper rack in photo has 6 points. At the base of the upper rack is a 2 inch tine that projects almost straight back, it's hard to see in the photo. Not sure if I should have counted the partially broken tine on the lower rack but it is the first one up from the base of head. He was shot from 60 yrds with an AR15, hand-loaded 223 round using a sierra 65gr gamepoint, MV of 2700 f/s. The shot entered 2 inches below his lower jaw and into his neck as he was looking straight at me. As seen in the photo the bullet did not even exit his massive neck. He dropped straight down and photo was taken 2 min after the shot. I hate tracking deer.
He's a perfect stranger like a cross of himself and a fox. He's a feeling arranger and a changer of the ways he talks. He's the unforeseen danger and the keeper of the key to the locks.

While he was facing you... Sounds ethical... Guess I'm not ethical either since last two I killed I shot in the chest. Not ethical would be not being able to hold a 4" group @ 65yards and taking the shot. If you can't make that shot you shouldn't be shooting a firearm truth be told

Good shot. Guess I'm not ethical either, I head-shot a spike once at 35 yards. I hate wasting meat.

Nice buck...
So what's with the "ethical" stuff? I don't see anything "un" ethical here!

Nice buck...
So what's with the "ethical" stuff? I don't see anything "un" ethical here! Nothing much really, just someone a lot less confident in their own shooting skills projecting that on the OP for taking a head/high neck shot....sounds like "someone" needs more range time..... Great buck Thermal...

While he was facing you... Sounds ethical... Dogdown23 maybe you should change your name to Downer23 for trying to put down a man for making a good clean kill on one hell of a buck! Congrats to the OP and don't worry about the guys that can't shoot and call that an unethical shot, they just need to learn to shoot better. And Nav those are some great deer! That last one that you killed is by far my fav. I love me a tall narrow rack!

Thanks for all the positive comments. I should have given my shooting scenario as I think most folks shoot from elevated positions which would make a shot like this sound a bit questionable. I do not hunt from an elevated position or near a feeder. I just use a folding chair and shooting stick so the deer's head is above my shooting perspective. My intention was a neck shot and went exactly where intended. I did not even see the deer approach me in the beginning. Some cattle had just passed through a portion of the trail he traveled. He was approaching straight towards me. No more than 3 minutes after the last cow passes I hear a deer snort at me, he was only 40 yards away, so I turned 90 degrees CW in my sitting position to see him as he is running away from me to witness him stop standing mostly broadside and facing directly at me. I am lefty so the CW position shift was ideal. I had the choice to take either a heart/lung shot but at 60 yrds I went up to the neck and took the shot. Everything unfolded quite fast so no time to get nervous.
He's a perfect stranger like a cross of himself and a fox. He's a feeling arranger and a changer of the ways he talks. He's the unforeseen danger and the keeper of the key to the locks.
