So I took my first Buck last weekend on opening evening hunt. I was watching a young 6 point and I decided to hit the doe bleat can just to see how he would react. Watching through my binoculars, he just raised his head and took a few steps into the woods. I lowered the binoculars and about 40 yards to the right this Buck was looking right at me. I took the shot and he darted into the woods. Like all the hunting shows tell you.....I gave him 30 minutes. When I get to my deer the coyotes have already taken his man sack and 1/4 of a hind quarter. Do y'all think these coyotes have caught on and know that when a gun fires there is a easy meal about to go down in the area....? I won't be giving 30 minutes on my next deer!! What y'all think?

Nice buck and no I don't think the coyotes are watching the hunting shows. If I'm sure I made a good shot I don't usually give them more than 5-10 minutes.

Coyotes absolutely can be habituated to the sound of a gun and the expectation of a meal. Happens regularly in south Texas, especially on properties that have to kill a lot of deer. Unless I have reason to suspect a bad shot, I never wait to retrieve. But, I shoulder shoot, so they rarely run.

My grandpa always said that after the shot he always waited long enough to smoke a cigarette. I give em 10 minutes or a bit longer.

As for the coyotes, I really am shocked that they'd be on your deer that fast. Either you have a lot of coyotes there, or they just happened to be close at hand. I'd be seriously hunting those evil fawn eating critters. Been shooting them here on our place for about a decade, and it's getting hard to find one now. I love shooting those sneaky devils every bit as much as hunting deer.

IMO, the long waiting thing is a bleed (pardon the pun) over from bow hunting. I begin looking immediately but take my take my time and move slowly.

About 1.5 hours before I took this deer.....I took out these two younguns with one shot....so yes, I could have a coyote problem. Not a bad hunt though....two coyotes and a nice Buck in two hours on the stand.

We have a place in Houston County and the coyotes are THICK. I need to spend more time up there and thin the heard.

Nice buck. Where abouts in Houston County are you?

There are no big deer in Houston County, not since antler restrictions were put in place.

Nice buck. Now start hammering more yotes.

Happened to me on the first deer I shot. I gave the buck 20 minutes and when I got there 3 coyotes were running away. That had eaten his guts and one ham was mostly gone. I shot one of the yotes the following morning. I'm convinced they either heard a death groan or responded to the shot.
