We have about 20 acres in Jim Hogg County, close to town but have been feeding corn only for the last few years. My family has the acres next to use and also feed corn. It's pretty much low fence all around and I've had some decent bucks and lots of doe's come through but still young for me to shot. Been thinking of putting out a Protein Feeder to see if I can attract more deer but not sure it would help with such a small amount of acres. What do you fellas think?

A lot depends on the hunting pressure around you.
If I was you I would set up a corn feeder, protein feeder, and a water trough inside of a large feed pen to keep hogs off. Try to keep activity to a min.
It's hell eatin em live

Protein feeder helps especially in dry years.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Protein feeder is really bringing the deer into my place, my deer also really like the record rack deer blocks. Like mentioned better fence it to keep hogs away. Good luck.

Alfalfa and apples. Apple scented corn. Quilty Protein Blocks. Feed as much as you can afford. It will take a little time. But will pay off. If you start Towards end of month, That's how I did it on 20 acres for 8 yrs. Had deer all over me. Good-Luck.

Corn is hard to beat. Feed it until they can't eat it all.

A lot depends on the hunting pressure around you.
. . . Try to keep activity to a min. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ this also depends on if you're there when any neighbors can see when you're there or not. you might want to show up at odd times during the middle of the week some time so they can't figure when you'll be there and when you won't. hopefully, they'll go hunt someone's else's land and stay off yours. and don't ride any 4 wheelers around all the time.

Food plots are always a great way to attract and hold deer on small acerage. This is especially effective if there are not many ag fields around you. It is also extremely cost effective compared to protein and corn feeders.

I would do all the above: protein, corn, food plots, water, limited pressure, etc. You want to make your little piece of land more appealing than your neighbors.

You guys have any good DIY ideas for a water set-up? We do have a water well but have to use the generator to pump water.

I guess its different in different areas but our deer will drink out of a hole, a footprint, leaf anything before they will drink from a pond, river, creek or trough. On a wet year like last year it was just a waste of time to hunt water. But if it dries up like they are saying it cant hurt.

It's so dry where I'm at that I need some sort of water system. I'd like to do some sort of DIY set-up close to my feeder or even buy some sort of water system. At some time back I saw a product by Oasis Wild Life or something like that that was ready to go. Just set it up and add water. Either way I need to get something out there set-up soon.

I have a 200 gallon Oasis Wild life watering system and called them to get another float. They are out of business.

I'm with Don K. Corn is the best attractant there is. Can supplement with protein or soybean or cottonseed or whatever else if you want to but on 20 acres it will have minimal effect on deer quality.
A small food plot would be a great addition if it will grow in your area without irrigation.
Since you have a well, you can set up a water trough if you can be around enough to keep it filled with the generator set up.
Long term, establishing a cover area or two would help if cover is sparse on your place.
Basically, though, you are just trying to attract deer and make them want to come to your place more than the surrounding places. A lot of your success or lack thereof will depend on what your neighbors are doing or not doing - as the case may be.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I'd like to set up some sort of water trough with something like a water storage tank that you can find on Craigslist. Rig it up to where it has a float and just keep the storage tank filled every time I go out there. Any of you fellas do something like this?
