Anyone have experiance putting in for mule deer tags out of state? Im not looking to draw right away but would like to get a few preference points started. I would like plenty of public land so places like Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, ect. Any input as to states or best units would be helpful! Thanks.

I put in for about 20 different tags each year in about 4 states - all species. If you want options in the future, you should be building points. It does cost though. Last year I cashed out my points in Wyoming (6 points) and shot a 183" high country mule deer. In 2011 I drew a deer permit in Colorado with 3 preference points and took a 31" buck. Drew a unit this year with 3 points - we'll see how that goes. Idaho doesn't have a preference point system - lottery every year just like New Mexico. Colorado is good for mule deer, but congested with elk hunters because most of the units are over the counter for elk. Here are the two bucks I mentioned above. The white horned deer is Wyoming and the snow picture is Colorado.

Colorado is the easiest deer state to hunt. Wide range of options, LO tags that can run cheaper than an ETX timberco lease, etc. Just apply for a point or put in for a decent quality 0pt archery hunt if you just have to hunt right away. Some of the same units that require 15-20pts for 3rd/4th seasons don't require near that many for ARchery or the ML hunt and the deer quality is the same, they're just not near as concentrated on the huge units.

I'll let you know when I'm 80 and finally draw a strip tag.

I do CO every season, but I'm originally from there and have access to thousands of acres of private land on the eastern plains. I go there to see family and hunt meat. Haven't hunted for antlers in 20+ years.
