Thinking about buying some land outside of Woodson and wanted to know about the deer population.

This is our second year for owning a place. Wish we had done it years ago. I'm heading down this afternoon just to relax for a few days.

coffee spelled backwards is eeffoc. I don't give eeffoc until I have my morning coffee.

Pitchfork Predator used to have a lease outside Woodson. Great hunting. He was in the Postoak woods east of Throckmorton.

I work in that area quite a bit. I always see plenty of deer and turkey. Last November I saw a 170+ buck standing on the side of the road between Graham and Woodson. He was chasing a doe and never spooked. I watched him for 5 minutes before he ran off. That was the biggest deer I've ever seen in the daytime. Several months ago I saw an Axis buck run over south of Throckmorton.

Scale, I'm out between Woodson and Graham in Murray, was this monster out that way?

I'm about 10 miles north of Woodson, but on the young county side, hunting has gotten exponentially better every year since the 8 pt 13 in spread law went into effect, I expect it to top out in 2 more years. This year we had 3 160+ on camera and judging by the trail cams there should be about 6 next year. The biggest problem for us is the neighbors taking small tens. Also about a mile from throckmorton county where whitetail hunting is still "rouge law" aka no law and smaller 8s seem not to make it over there. So from what I gather it's really hit and miss in that county.

Why is it that every time I push #1 for english, I cannot understand the person on the other end???

I think we lose most of our borderline bucks during the rut when they wander into that county, never to be seen again!!!

Scale, there is some good country around Miller Bend Rd., close to the Brazos and good cover that way. Wisco, I too think that I have seen more, nice bucks on camera since the ARs went into play. 13" but no requirement on points.

3 miles east of Woodson. Decent population of deer but area has really good genetics. Plenty of turkey, quail, and pigs. Get your pig population under control and rest of the wildlife will thrive. We have slaughtered the pigs for 4 years and have noticed a huge jump in Quail and turkey.
Lots of rattlesnakes. 130-160 class whitetail common in our area

Live to hunt, forced to work!

I hunted close to there for two years. Our lease was split and the owner sold half of it leaving it too small for our group. I killed a real nice 9 that scored 152 and change not very far east of Woodson off FM209. One of the first CR's you come to. The remainder of that lease was on the corner of FM209 and FM548. We left a couple of good deer roaming around out there. I love that area.

Leo,

Do you mean 209 and 578? What corner was that lease on?

Thanks,

Im north of you at FM2356, there are some big deer around and in Throckmorton. If I could, I would not hesitate to purchase land out there. Stop by the processor in town during deer season and you will see some big bucks. Granted there are plenty of small ones and ones with not so appreciated antler growth. BUT the county is still not under the antler restrictions so you can manage however you choose.

Can be great hunting if managed right. The genetics are there. Huge hogs and plenty of turkey. A lot depends on the neighbors you have.
