Why the hate for turkeys? I can understand an invasive species like pigs but not something natural to the area.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

There was an article in the Sunday Dallas Morning News about hogs. It is estimated there are 2.8 million hogs is Texas and the last estimate of harvesting them was 750,000 about 25%. To make any headway at all it suggested closer to 50% needed to be harvested. We have our work cut out. Maybe, clone Djones and TXKiller.

The hogs will eat the turkey eggs in the spring. They'll kill and eat fawns when they find them.

I would take the turkeys any day over the destructive hogs.Kill them now and don't let up. Build a big circle trap and try to catch the whole herd. You will learn to hate them real quick.

Once it gets cold we eat all of them that we shoot (up to 200lbs).

We smoke the shoulders and hams and they ALWAYS come out extremely tender and juicy. We shred the meat andmake pulled pork out sandwiches of them. You just have to know how to prepare it. If you go by time instead of internal meat temp then it will have a higher probability for it to turn out like boot leather.

The tenderloins aren't that big so we usually throw those on the grill for a little snack after we get finished cleaning them.

I chicken fry the backstrap in a Ritz cracker breading. It's simple and AWESOME! Cut your backstrap (silver skin removed) into 1" slices and pound them out. In a ziplock bag, add a couple of packages of Ritz crackers. Remove all the air from the bag and close it up. Pound out the crackers until it is a fine powder. I usually let my son do this part. You can add cajun seasoning to take it up a notch. Just remember that pork is naturally salty so you don't want to add too much at first. Then just cook it as you would any other chicken fried steak. Egg mixture, breading mixture, hot oil.

Just a thought for anyone who hasn't shot one and tried to cook them.

I guess what I am trying to say is, now that you have them, you will always have them. So you might as well benefit from the resource and put meat on the table. It also gives you something else to hunt in the off season. Just trying to look for a positive for you.

I for one am glad I got deer, hog and turkey on my land. I think they can all live in harmony if managed. And, you got to love being able to big game hunt all year!

My dad always said that nobody should be on food stamps with all the hogs we have running around.

I KNOW HOW TO COOK. That is not the problem. Our hogs are not the same as east Texas hogs. They have a tough life and very little to no fat. I have tried several that were in the 50 - 70 lb range. Not worth the effort. The buzzards and coyotes can have them.

Nothing to love about hogs. Exterminate them all and feed to the scavengers.
