I need to build a feeder pen and I want to make it as low as I can get away with. Have y'all tried to cut a 50" tall panel in half for your pens? Any ideas, tips and pictures would be great.

Use the hog panels from tractor supply, they are either 32 or 34 in and will do fine unless you have cows that like to high jump.

I saw an article on some research done on pen height for hogs only. IIRC it was 28" to keep most hogs out. I cut some 50" panels in half to build 2 of my first pens. That height worked good for everything except pigs that go into the pen thru the larger squares in the wire. That led to them knocking down panels and larger hogs getting inside the pens. I rebuilt the pens using 34" tall hog panels and no problems since that time.

Standard sized hog panels unless you have cows. Range cows can (will) get in! All it takes is once. At my place, if I had it to do over, I would use cattle panels and be done with it! Damn cows!

All we have ever used is hog panels.

34" hog panel with a strand of barb wire around the pen. Our rancher moved some new cows on our lease and just about the same time I put one of those protein blocks inside the pen. They picked up on the smell of the block and one eventually jumped in followed by 4 more...got it on trail camera. I put the barb wire around the pen and have not put anymore blocks inside and no more problem.

started with hog panels and worked great for a while then the cows got a wild hair in their butts and we went round and round with them and destroying pens well into last season. Finally rebuilt mine with 8 - 50" cattle panels in late november...so far so good. Thinking about doing it over with 10-12 cattle panels...8 seems a little cramped but still had 6-7 bucks at a time destroying the protien

We have 34 inch hog panels and have never had a cow get in on my current place in 3 years since I put them up on 6 feeders. 2 more are not fenced and not having too many issues. On my old lease a few miles a way one cow would jump them and had to take them down. We have 1,100 acres with about 50 cows I guess and are lucky.

I would go with hog panels and see how they work. We have fawns jump in later summer with no issue. Do the top barb wire strand if they get in but seems only one or two might become a problem. Our cow guy feeds them daily though at a central place.

34" panels work well for me. Framed in 1" square tubing. Portable. Expandable. Leave a gap between panels big enough to get a hammer between sections. Tie at top and bottom. Expensive. Two beer installation.

34" hog panels..........Over lap ends one square ( tie together w/wire) keep this up going around while forming a circle (6 panels will be about 30' Diameter) after joining the ends together to form circle get inside and put up tee posts at each joint and one in between...Hope this makes sense.

Above works great for me except I use 10 hog panels and that makes about a 50' diameter circle. this takes 20 t-post.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Unless you already have the cattle or 50" panel and do not want to spend anymore $$ on hog panels.

What you can do is cut the top three rows off the 50" panels, I think each square is 6" in diameter so that will bring the top of your pen down to 32".
Then use the 18" you cut off the top and wire them to the bottom where they are splitting the squares in half to make the bottom openings half their original size, that should stop the little porkers from getting in up

I used the 50" cattle panels, using 7 panels. I cut one of the 50" in half (25" tall) and put on the front and back side of the pen with the cut ends up to funnel the game in from front and back ... making an 8 panel round pen. We haven't had any issues with hogs but we don't have a hog problem at this ranch (yet), just a few pass thru from time to time. We do have feral cattle & horses but they haven't bothered the pens/feeders either.

I wish i was as lucky as everyone else, i have 16 panel hog panel pens, but i also have T posts at the connecting ends and in the middle, with pics of Hogs and Cows eating my protein and corn at the same time.
One bull #72 likes to jump in the pen and take a nap and hang with herds of pigs while they eat everything.
So i added a Hot fence this weekend to see if that keeps out the cows...Pigs you cant stop when they can dig under whatever they want...we have sandy soil...

How you want to build your pen really depends on what you want to let in and what you want to keep out.

On my old place, the one that would jump in wasn't graceful and would get its hind foot caught in it. You could hear the shaking a mile away. That's when I took those down and never saw them again when hunting. Current place no issue.

Wait...what? You are saying that an animal that weighs 10 times what a whitetail weighs plus is 10 times less agile than a whitetail can easily jump over 7' fence vs. a whitetail that can't jump an 8' fence according to the experts. loco
