looking for a hardy pear tree resistant to disease and drought. I am east Texas. If you already grow pears do you no the name, what part of Texas, do you eat or deer eat or both, easy to maintain? My purpose is for deer, but if Im in the area Ill grab one for myself. Just ordered persimmon. Thanks

Persimmon is all you need. They will eat them all and they are more insect and disease resistant.

No idea of the name but my uncle had one was some type of a hard pear, not the best for eating (for people) animals loved them.
I planted two 2 years ago this summer and sometimes I wonder if they are fake trees, I swear they haven't grown an inch. I don't think they even lost their leaves last winter.

There are several cultivars/rootstocks of pear to grow, just google it, below is a great site to visit and find which cultivar you need to control blight and whatnot. https://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/homefruit/pear/pear.htmlI have Bartlett and Moon-glow for now, easy to grow, but as is with all new trees, they need a reliable water program to flourish, same with your persimmons. Even during dry winter weather, the roots are growing fo the next springs growth and production, so water needed then, but in lesser amount. I have seen many old farmsteads across Texas that are only known because of the old mature pears still going strong. BTW, I put a 24"tall 1/2"x1/2" hardware cloth around the base of my young trees to keep rabbits from chewing the bark, I also use some of a roll of 4"x4" concrete wire as a surround to keep the deer off my young trees. If you want/need trained recommendations, ask your county Agriculture agent to come out, he will know, has publications you can get and he is FREE.
