I did a search over the last year here on the forum and didn't find any info. Looking at a place off 79 about 4 or 5 miles NE of Throckmorton. How is the hunting in that area? Deer numbers and quality? Thanks for any info you have.

What is the name of the ranch you are looking at? I was on one in that area that I would not recommend. The owner put way to many guns on it, and the selling point was that it is $1000.00/gun. It was not worth it. No one in our group renewed. I think they go through this every year.

This has been a fairly established group for 12-15 years and I was asked if I was interested in taking an opening. It works out to about 240 acres per person but I don't know the area at all. I've hunted in areas with a way higher hunter density that handled it very well and been where everyone has a section and it was not as productive. I don't know what the cover or terrain is like since I haven't seen it yet. I'm not going to have enough time to look at the property as I would like due to scheduling conflicts.

If you know the guys on it, and they are honest with you, it sounds like a good opportunity. There is quality deer hunting in that area. The place I was on was a high turn over churning operation, where quick money for the owner was the goal. I would usually not join a lease that I did not see first. However, there are other situations that arise, where it may be worthwhile.

The area has very good potential. The terrain can very from all mesquite to a mix of post oak, live oak and cedar as well. Rolling hills. Plenty of deer, turkey and wild hogs. Quail have made a pretty good come back. Water is a must.

Decent potential. But sure seems like Throckmorton County is getting packed with hunters. Deer are not that dense out there.

3 years ago I hunted about 5 miles East of there. Lot of hogs, good number of turkey and good deer are there. Due to pressure and most bucks not making it past 3 years, a 130 is a good one. If you do not have a good lease now, and with the demand for leases, it will be difficult to find one better based on the location and number of acres per gun.

I hunted the Spade Ranch for 15 years and now hunt a different ranch but same area. Most places out there have good potential but seems like a lot of pressure. Last year was not a good year for us, as there seems to be a hole in the deer population due to the drought. Not many 5 and 6 year old deer around (they were always hard to find but last year they seemed extinct). Spots out there are getting harder and harder to find, so you might want to make the time and go look at it.

Definitely not planning on paying sight unseen. I would prefer to spend at least a whole day looking around but most likely will only have a few hours so I was trying to gather some area info first. Thanks for the input.

You bet you will see a hole...2011 was the worst drought since 1957 in the area...our fawn crop was at 12%...not very many 2011-2012 models walking around.

I hunted Haskell quite a bit this fall, and drove through Throckmorton every trip on 380.
I saw some BIG bucks right from the highway. There was one pasture that I saw a 150" several times. Saw two other bucks that were in the 140" class. Didn't see a lot of deer, but did see some nice ones. I saw quite a bit of rutting activity. I remember thinking it would be a nice place to hunt based on the activity I saw just from driving through!
I used to stop off 380 quite a bit and take pics, as there are an exceptional number of raptors along the highway. It was not the uncommon while I was pulled taking pics of hawks to see deer moving about.
There is a big steer sculpture on 380. About 7-8 miles east of there, on the south side of the highway - was a hotspot for seeing the biggest deer. If I was passing through anytime after 4pm, there was a good chance I'd see some very nice deer on the edge of the brush/cultivation.
