The 30 day post rut period is critical to get bucks back into good shape going into the spring. I feed a high quality 20% deer protein pellet free choice year round. If you can only feed for a period of time I would feed from end of deer season till late Aug/early Sept. If that is still to much then I would feed from Feb 1st till August 1st. If you have great habitat and low deer numbers 2-3 months post rut might be enough.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

What ranchman said is what we do.
In good years they don't eat as much and in bad years you have nice fat happy healthy deer.
It's hell eatin em live

We feed a 20% pellet from January 15 through October 31, unless range conditions are poor. We hunt from Oct through February which is why we shut off the protein at the end of October. Otherwise, a bunch of mature deer will continue hitting those protein feeders at night. But if range conditions are poor, we leave the free-choice feeders open. We only fed nine tons last year because the country was in such good shape. We've fed as much as 10 tons/month during the drought.

Don't mean to hy-jack this thread but Ranchman's site on CWD re. CWD Myths should be posted in every sporting goods store in the state and by Texas Parks and Wildlife.

I also feed a 20% L&E pellet year round. Between 7-8 tons a year.
