This happened twice to me Saturday. Once in the morning & again that afternoon.
Hunting in W. Texas cactus & mesquite. Also happened on opening morning.

on opening morning:

Due to AR restrictions : using Binoculars to glass for and judge deer for AR size,
find one , decide its legal , pick up rifle and try to acquire a shot, deer has walked or run or trotted behind whatever the "biggest mesquite tree in the vicinity"

this weekend:

tried glassing deer just using scope for more speed , same thing see a deer , look to see if buck or doe, make a snap judgment on legal or not, swing back for shot placement - Deer walks behind brush/tree - Gone, 2 freaking times this weekend.

Years Ago:

when we hunted in East Texas : see Deer-find fur-shoot (then figure out if buck/doe/spike etc etc)

not sure how to speed up the process & still be a ethical hunter and comply with lease & AR restrictions and not lose my freaking mind

wish list:

Now if someone could come up with one of these new electronic scopes that not only read distance & adjust trajectory but also is able to "measure for AR " and give you a simple go/no go indication in less than a sec , you would have a million dollar seller!

If you have to look and try to figure out if he is wide enough then he is prob too close to shoot anyways.

Have you tried grunting or something like that to get him to stop?

The Shots I have been seeing are in the 150-180 yard range - not a extreme distance but still far enough away to need some kind on magnification to get a idea on rack size & width . If deer is coming either toward or away from you makes it easier to judge . The 2 deer Saturday were side profile to me and traveling, I could only see one side of the Rack.

I know in East Texas we use to "whistle Stop Deer" for a quick shot.( under a 100 yards)

Having a Grunt call & trying to use it to stop a deer - I don't know , seems you would be using up time and having your hands busy with the grunt call & it still wouldn't help if he stopped behind the mesquite/cedar etc

May try a "whistle Stop" but not sure at 150-180 yards out how well it will work but it at least something to try.

Thanks hetman

PS A funny incident happened to my hunting buddy last weekend - in a blind 3/4 up the side of a mesa looking a 2 feeder's in a Bowl shaped area . decides to try rattling a Buck in and it worked to a degree . Buck came in from top of the Mesa to the back door of the blind and huffed & puffed & snorted from 3-4 feet away from the back door and made my buddy almost chit himself.

I think what you are describing is kind of the point of AR. Trying to slow the process down and look at the animal a bit before just shooting any deer with antlers. Now, if AR's are right or wrong is another question. But if your hunting in a county that has it, thats just the nature of the beast.
