I drew my mule deer tag for unit 30 Oct 31- Nov 4 rifle. First time to put in for a draw. Now to get serious about getting into shape.

Congrats! Increasing your cardio will help keep you from getting winded while hunting. And, of course, it will help when hauling out your kill!

First get yourself a copy of the BLM land and New Mexico maps of the area. Study the maps and do a Google search for hunting in NM Unit 30.
Here is one source of the maps. http://www.nm.blm.gov/huntingUnitMaps/fullSite/fullSite.html

Good luck.

I've hunted unit 30 my whole life. Love the Guadalupes. I didn't put it down as a choice on this year's draw because it's basically a guaranteed draw. Instead this year I put in for better units. Didn't draw out, but I'm just going to buy an over the counter left over tag for unit 30 muzzleloader. They usually have about 50% left over. Back in the day unit 30 was killer. Now with as many mountain lions as there are there, coupled with fires and drought, the deer population has taken quite the beating. As I've said I've been hunting it since I was 9 or so. About 5 years ago was the worst I'd ever seen it. I went last year and could tell it was getting a little better but still a long long way from what it used to be.

What's messed up is the mountains are filled with elk now... Literally everywhere. Couldn't believe it.

This will be my 20th year to hunt 30 and you are right, between the lions and drought, the deer have taken a hit. I have found a few areas where we see deer pretty consistently but finding a good shooter buck is the hard part but they are there. The elk population has really grown and some really good bulls. A rancher who lives there at Queen put his daughter on a 375in bull. There was talk of opening up 30 to rifle hunts for elk this year but not sure it happened. I love the area.

They had 30 last year. They were headed out as I was headed in for muzzleloading. I actually put in for it as my third elk choice this year. I knew I didn't stand a chance of drawing but I had to try lol.

Man I suck at getting into shape. Of course round is a shape too.

This rain has not made it easy to take my walks and my in-house exercises don't seem to be doing much except maintaining what I have. It's funny how one can come up with all kinds of reasons not to do something, that will make you uncomfortable. I still have about 5 months to get serious. I really need to get rid of 20 pounds, not just for this hunt either.

[/quote I'm hunting Unit 30 as well and I've even bought me a bike to ride to help get in shape and drop a few pounds as well. You know you're an outdoorsman when the motivating factor to get I shape and lose weight is hunting season and not you're over all well being. I hate sucking air after climbing a mountain.

Any motivation is better than none at all.

We are in the process of finishing the interior remodel of our home. I had thought about getting a stair climber but don't have a place to store it. Now that the sun is back out I will have one less excuse.

Good luck with your training.
