Just got a new .308 that I will mainly be using for deer hunting in west Texas and on hogs if they present themselves. Knowing that 90% of my shots taken at deer will be under 250yds what grain bullet is the best fit. 150gr or 180gr?

See what your gun likes. Try 165 gr Accubond or 165gr Hornady Superformance SST

A wealth of info here... http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowledgebase/.308+Winchester+7.62+NATO.html

***I am absolutely not a very serious shooter***

I use 150-grain Core Lokt and at 200 or less, I have had zero issues in 10 years. Dropped a 296-lb hog and many, many smaller hogs and deer.

If your gun shoots Core-Lokts well, it will definitely get the job done. Past 300 yds you may want something different but out to there I think it's a better bullet than the SST (which is what I shoot now). My rifle just won't shoot them that accurately so I switched to the Hornady SF SST 150gr. You won't need 180gr for anything in Texas. Where are you located? If you're near Lubbock, I have some 165 Bergers and some 165 Noslers I'd let you shoot a few of.

I'd try a few different brands, weights & bullet types to see what it likes best.

Mine shoots Federal premium 165grn sierra game kings the best, by quite a large margin.

There is a SIGNIFICANT difference between the 165/168gr loads and the 180r loads in the .308

The 180 drops, depending on the gun/powder, a LOT more - even at 100 yards.

I would stick to the lighter loads - they shoot much flatter and are much more forgiving. The 180gr are for big game, like in Africa - and then I found the 165/168gr Berger did a bang-up job,

165/168. Almost every gun likes this weight. While many will not shoot the 150 or 180s well.

I am currently in the DFW area. I have been given some Federal and Norma rounds to try but they are both in the 180gr. In my .270 I have always been a fan of Core-Lockts and because of that would like to try them out. Just wasn't sure if I should be spending my time and money on the 150gr or 180gr.

I used to use 150 grain .308 Win. Core Lokts in my Ruger GSR (when I had it) on hogs. They worked GREAT, never took a shot at any over 150 yards, all DRT.

My Savage 308 loves eating the Core Lokts. Ive shot a few others out of mine but the CL's group best

For some reason, my .308 I get the best accuracy with Federal Fusion.

coffee spelled backwards is eeffoc. I don't give eeffoc until I have my morning coffee.
