I just finished rebuilding my old international 12' disc, new bearings, new wheels, new discs, and new hoses and cylinder. Contemplating planting about 5 acres in early May of cow peas or beans on my lease in George West, give me your thoughts if I'm to late or to early. Should I be planting something else, just want to hold deer on property. I can expand the plot to approximately to 8 acres and have another spot that can be planted that's 3-4 acres.

Expand with clover as an annual.

I would plant ASAP to take full advantage of the spring rainfall.

I planted 11 acres of soybeans and lab lab last week. I would not waste money on any clovers for right now in South Texas. If I were to plant clovers I would plant them in the fall with oats. I would plant Madrid or Yubam and talk with a local seed dealer about other clovers for that area. Madrid and Hubam will give you added forage till around June with a fall planting. Spring planting of clovers is a waste in the heat of South Texas. If the landowner has cattle I would be careful with clovers if they can get to the food plot. As much rain as we have had and all the winter forbs we have deer are not moving or needing much now. We have a bumper crop of Burr Clover right now that is need deep in some area. Tallow weed is also thick in low/bottom land areas. It can run as high as 38% protein in wet year like this. A lot spring forbs are popping now also. Brush is putting on a lot of fresh new growth. With any food plot you plant for spring, you want it up tall enough to take grazing pressure in May when bucks start their new antler growth. Getting a plot up and growing before the summer heats sets in is critical here.

Where did you get the lab lab from?

I planted coypeas yesterday. If this is the first time to plant the food plot, I would be focussed more on getting it ready for the fall planting then putting a lot of effort into a late spring planting. Have the soil tested and add what you need for what you plan to hunt over. That is always the focus. Till it all up real good and through out what you want to see what happens. Remember, what you do now to the soil wont show up in your plants for 3 to six months. You might even have to test it again before fall planting and add more of what you are low on.

For me, spring is almost a waste of time planting because the deer have all the new growth coming up. I do it to keep the weeds down and make my soil better for fall.

You can talk to the guys at Pogue Agri-Partners in Kenedy or Lyssy & Eckels in George West about seed. I got my Lab Lab and Soybeans from Pogue since I was in Kenedy the day before I was going to plant. They will have a spring mix or individual seeds such as lab lab, soybeans or cowpeas. I am planting a spring plot for early summer forage for deer when ours native growth will be mature and less palatable. May and June are critical months for antler growth and doe health. In some areas a buck can put on 45% of his total antler growth in the month of June. Clovers do better here in the fall and winter and peas/beans do better in the spring and summer. I also try to time my planting around the spring green up with the native plants and soil temps. That way the deer are not hammering my plots when they first start to grow. A lot of the peas/bean are slow to grow the first 14-21 days. They emerge with 2 leaves then sit at that stage while they grow a root structure. If a deer eats those first 2 leaves then it will usually kill the plant. So getting the seedlings to a multi-leaf stage gets you the maximum return from you planting.

That will work, I get all my feed from Lyssy & Eckels. This is the first plot ever put in on the property so I'm going to plant something fairly cheap just get the ground ready for fall planting and to see what breaks on my disc so I can replace what I need before fall gets here. I plan on applying pelletized lime in May and taking a sample in August. The ground is black and sandy and has wild clover on it most it now.

Due you need lime? Most of the soils in that South Texas area do not need lime. I would call ahead to the store and ask them if they have seed and get them to hold what you will be needing. Do you have any livestock on the place?

Not really, last test was 6.3 September 14. I was going to put out some pelletized lime my co-op sales that has soil conditioning additives they mostly use on hay pastures. Don't ask what the additives are, spell check can't even help if I try to write it.
