Anybody know much about Pushmataha County Oklahoma? Some friends and I just picked up a lease there and are looking for any information on the area. It will be another week or two before we can start getting our feeders and cameras out.

Thanks,

Plan on bears wearing out your feeder.you can hunt them during a short season....some pretty good deer showing up every once in a while..and LOCAL POACHERS everywhere...even if you contact the local guy, he cant keep tabs on your place..Been there, done that...From experience, most land up there is not fenced due to the terrain...So you will have people on your cameras wandering around, with the excuse.."I thought it was my place...

Hunted in Push County with my brothers for a number of years. Got some very big deer up there. Found Black Powder Season best time to hunt. For peace of mind you need to be hunting on private land which is fenced with lock on gate. Otherwise, you will find that on public land you have just got lots of folks to deal with. Okies shut down school for the Rifle Season and the whole family goes to the woods. Folks up there enjoy venison year around.

I would say it is about 50/50 on the land that is poached. The further you can get from Antlers, the better. And, stay away from Kiamichi Wilderness area (Moyers). I know several people that have been poached a bunch and several that have never been violated (or not know about it). If you are a bow hunter, the season goes from Oct 1 to Jan 15th and the tag is less than $300. The annual rainfall in the area in over 40" and food plots do very well (if you have soil and not rock).

If you can find a good place (I wouldn't lease, I would buy), it is cheaper than leasing in hill country and less miles/time from North Dallas Area (Plano/Frisco). And, your chance of getting a 170 plus low fence buck is much higher. A mature buck (4 to 5 years old) scores about 140 on average up there.

I am hoping my next land purchase will be about 200 acres up there in the mountains. I just got to find the "right" place.

It is Timber Company land. When we went and looked at the lease before signing it, it looked like the lease was landlocked by other leases in the area. We are about 15 minutes from Antlers and 25 minutes from Moyers. Lease is going to be used for mainly archery only during deer season. May pull out the guns for turkey, yotes, and hogs. I have heard equal good and bad about poaching and theft in Push, just looking for more information.

May have to go Old School and put out my 35mm trail cameras in hopes they will be left alone!

Would it be worth putting out mineral blocks as apposed to feeders or do the deer in the area even touch them?

Follow this thread and it should point you in the right direction. search for the threads from years past if you have some time to kill.

Hunting is tough but rewarding. we are on 1300 acres in timber land about halfway between clayton and antlers. we haven't had poaching or theft problems...yet. the bears are terrible. don't put your feeders up till september. for some reason they only hit them in july and august at our place. they destroy the feeders though. you should expect the four year old bucks to be in the 135-140" range. not many get older because of the pressure but we have a few 150-160 bucks on our place. we also share pictures with our neighbors to confirm and attempt to manage the deer.

here is a solid one i killed last year in black powder season. 140" on the dot. my largest yet an the largest taken on our place. I've got him held out pretty far but he is over 20" wide.
