I found a lease close to the natural area that I'm considering looking at. Anything about the area that I should be concerned with? I hunted north of Medina, TX that last few yrs so I know generally what the deer will look like size/quality. Any one have good/bad news I should be aware of for that area?

That area has been in a bad drought. Water wells and surface water can be iffy in that general area. I lived SE of the park and the large ranch that was close to it. It is not unusual to see 140+ type deer in good years. I know of some 160+ deer that were killed LF to the south of the park about half way to Hondo. A few exotics roam around also. Some areas have good deer numbers and some less but still huntable numbers. Water is the key in that area, have it and you will have game.

Thanks STX, it's a 1600 acre cattle ranch, hoping they have water stations for cattle which should also draw some deer to the area. Sounds promising we will see.

Is it to the east or southeast or south or????? I killed two 120 class 10 points with a bow off of my 25 acre place that was about 16 miles due north of Hondo back when I lived there. I was probably less than 4 miles from the SE corner of the park.

I don't know planning on heading out this weekend. Hopefully it's close to where you were hunting.

They said it was 15 minutes from town going towards the park, I'll let you know. Gonna call tomorrow and ask a few more questions.

Looking bleak for this coming season, we played phone tag all last week and haven't heard from him since Friday. No call back today. Back to the drawing board!

Very tiny bodied deer there. Plenty of exotics around. I've hunted the draw hunt for that place and my second son went camping there over spring break. He saw deer and blackbuck every where.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Define tiny bodied? One of the 10 points I killed dressed 125 as a 3 yr old and the other around 135 as a 5 yr old just a couple miles to the SE of that WMA. Not huge but they were not your typical Hill Country deer either. With age and good rainfall you can get decent body size in that area.

I drive out that way occasionally and hunted near there at one time. There is a big population of whitetail and axis in the area. I always see them along the road even during the day.

I understand the deer aren't going to be large, although I have seen some brutes just south of that area. I'm more concerned with actual deer density. I'm not after trophy deer, enjoy the hunt and time in the woods more than anything. Did make contact again and sounds promising, so I'm hoping to see it this week, I'll keep you posted STX on location.
