I've just got access to land in Clayton COunty Iowa, near Osterdock. Never hunted or have been in Iowa. We were granted access to friends land, if we get drawn. WHen is rut, and what to expect? They have a draw and more than likely we'd be hunting the first shotgun season. Any help is greatly appreciated.

hunting deer up their is basicaly the same as hunting in Texas, some area's hold more deer than others.. hunt the moon phases, same as ya would in Texas.. the biggest difference will be the weather, although lately they been having pretty mild winters, some area's don't skimp with the corn & food plot's, again depending on the area u end up hunting.. ya might expect ta see bigger deer, do u have a shot gun with rifle barrel? good luck with the draw, think you'll enjoy it..

Redtrail - If interested i have a single shot 20 gauge shotgun with a fully rifled barrel that shoots sabot slugs for sale in the classifieds forum for $200 with a scope and couple of boxes of sabot slugs. This is a great gun for the shotgun only states. I have shot several deer out to 175 yards with the slug. Look up the ballistics on the Federal Premium tipped sabot slugs in 3". Almost like shooting a rifle. If interested in the gun shoot me an email jodytaylor1961@gmail.com
Happy hunting and good luck in Iowa!

Rut is usually around 1st week of November. If you have never put in you probably won't be drawn the first go around. It's a great state to hunt, I'm gonna be putting in this year too.

I am in Iowa...my favorite is the 4th-14th. Good luck, tough to draw archery tag without points.

Thanks Gents!
A little off topic, I think we in Texas should make the IOWAN's draw to hunt down here. Out of state tag $578 with all included.

Iowa is easier to draw a firearm tag for out of staters but then again unit matters too. The MidWest is something else. No one can understand until they have been there. If hunting with a shotgun, it is important that you make it the 1st season because after the lead starts flying the deer go nocturnal quick. Best of luck to you getting drawn and better luck to you getting one of those monster MidWest deer on the ground.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.
