I have a homemade pick up bed trailer that i use around the propriety . The last time it was registered was like 2010-1011 with farm tags back when that was not a big deal . I would like to register it back on the road . Concerning the new laws with homemade and farm trailers , How hard would it be to trade in the farm plates for regulars ? Would i still have to get it in inspected even though it was already in the system ? I live in Brazos county .

You should be able to go in and get new tags for a home made trailer. I've done it several times after letting my trailer set up.

Inspection is only necessary if GW or registered weight exceeds 4500 lbs.

So if you register it like most single axle trailers for 3500lbs should be no problems.

Why change it? I have farm tags on my trailer. It is used pretty much for hauling stuff to, from, and around the ranch with the odd random use to haul mulch or something for the yard at home.

If you have an AG exemption you can get farm tags. If you don't you get regular ones. Being in the system does not mean you get farm tags. You have to show your exemption each time you get tags.

That is true, I have to show my AG exempt card every year to get my farm exempt tags.

yep, learned my lesson when I covered my property over to Wildlife Improvement Management exemption, that no longer qualifies as ag exempt and since I am honest on filling out the ag exemption paperwork, I am no longer qualified. what used to cost $5 for a trailer tag is now $97 on one trailer, and I own several trailers that I used on the property that all got converted over. ouch!

If the trailer stays on the property there is no need to tag it. Also having farm tags you still have to pay sales tax on any thing for it, and that also applies to your vehicles now. Made a lot of my customers mad that they are no longer exempt from sales tax. If it has tags of any kind except governmental you pay tax. This I know from State audit.

Folks sure get things confused.

Having a Texas agricultural and timber exemption registration number (AG/timber tax exemption) from the State is completely different than what some folks call 'ag exemption' on property taxes from the County.

Ag/timber exemption means you do not pay sales tax on qualified purchases and is a must have to be able to get & use farm tags for vehicles.
It is not a card you show, number you give or a form you fill out on every purchase you make.
It is only for qualified purchases, if you use it for everything under the sun sooner or later you will get audited to prove all your purchases meet the states requirements for sales tax deferral.
I personally know a man that went through an audit last summer, he used it for dang near everything, ended up owing $16,300, the state settled for $8800.
Lost his ag/timber exemption number and battled with the county to keep his property 1-D-1 valuation.
It is up to the one using the sales tax exemption to know what is and what isn't a qualified purchase.
This link explains it all.
---> Tx comptroller

County property tax valuation 1-D agriculture appraisal, or, 1-D-1 (open space) agriculture use or wildlife management use, all have different requirements & use different forms to apply and obtain.
County property tax valuation 1-D or 1-D-1 has nothing to do with state sales tax, farm tags or anything other than a reduction in county property tax.
You cannot get farm tags or defer state sales tax with a county property tax valuation 1-D/1-D-1.
All counties can & frequently do set up their own requirements for obtaining and or continuance of 1-D / 1-D-1.
To get accurate information on this you need to contact your county CAD, some have info online, some don't.

There used to be a roofing company here in Wichita Falls that had farm tags on all their trailers. Even saw some on golf cart and boat trailers

I know more than one person with a half dozen different kinds of trailers, boat, flatbed, travel trailer etc. that just move one trailer tag from trailer to trailer as needed.
