finally have to do something to my old Yamaha. The brake appears to be dragging in the drum. It shouldn't be that complicated to replace the brake pads, but that's easy to say while I'm sitting in the house. Something always goes wrong. So...

Any brake repair wisdom you want to share will be much appreciated. And what parts do I need that I don't know I need. Thanks.

My brother lives in or outside of Salado. He could be of assistance most likely...

If it's drum then it's probably cable operated. If you can't grease the cable yourself then replace it. In 18,000 miles I didn't even come close to wearing out a set of pads out, but had to replace the cable a few times. The cables build up dirt inside and begin to drag against the sheath making the pads drag on the drum.

Yep, just clean up the cable and adjust the wing nuts if needed.

Thanks guys. I'll work on the cable today and get a new one tomorrow in Waco. Your approach beats the heck out of me pulling the drum off.

You guys are the best. The Big Bear is fixed. I jacked up the rear so I could get to the wing nuts. I loosened them and put penetrating oil on everything but the family cat. Checked the brake levers to see if they had the right amount of squeeze, and then I checked the foot brake. And there was the problem. Wasn't a cable at all, but the foot brake (which I rarely use) hadn't been lubed in last 20,000 times I took it through the mud and water and it was semi-frozen in the down position, causing the brakes to contact the drum. I blasted that with penetrating oil and white lithium grease, worked it up and down till my arm hurt and all is well.

If it wasn't for your feedback, I'd have pulled the wheel, tried to get the drum off, made a mess, thrown half of my tools against the far wall, and used every cuss word I could remember. And then...a day or two later, I'd have found that foot brake lever being stuck. But all that ugly stuff didn't happen.

Thanks.

Good deal and glad I seen this as well. Buddy of mine borrowed my Grizzly this past weekend and said the brakes were getting really bad. Looks like I have a solid game plan now

if its a Grizzly 660, it has a disk brake on the drive shaft. The 700 has two calipers just like a a car. What model do yo have?

Mine is a 2000 model year Big Bear 400, with a rear drum brake. It's worth mention that the brake must have been dragging slightly for quite a long time. I actually have to use the brake to stop now, whereas it would just slow down on it's own and do so quickly.

That old Yamaha runs so darn nice. I fixed all the little things that needed fixing, which wasn't much, and except for being an ugly faded red (bordering on being dark pink), starts, idles, and runs perfectly. I did a lot of research before I bought it, and I guess I did it right.

Big Bears are great bikes. Lookup Linseed oil/paint thinner mixture to restore those plastics.
