I'm fairly sure he's at least 5.5 yrs old. What do you think? Property is south of Austin.

That head looks disproportionately large next to his body. He's mature. If you think he is 5.5, I wouldn't argue.

Really hard to tell from the way he is standing and that one pic. He does not have a very large pad on his hocks or the head/face for a mature buck. He looks mature and that may be from the way he is standing also.

This is what I saw, too, so I guess that I am now as good at aging deer as stxranchman. Yeap banana

All joking aside, he's at least 3.5, probably older, but something about his head and neck compared to the rest of his body doesn't seem to look proportionate to me. I'd need to see more photos, and in another month or so his body should really start showing his age a lot more clearly. Nice deer, though.

What county are you in? I'm curious how the deer herd in areas south of Austin from roughly Caldwell to Gonzales to Houston is doing these days. Seems like the first counties with AR's were in this area and it was a decent amount of time ago, too. I wonder how much that has improved the quality of the deer down there over that time span.

I would say 5 maybe older. Seems to have a skinny neck for its age compared to the body. Although the neck looks to be low and sags where it meets the body

Could be an optical illusion because of the way he is leaning forward but!

Large brisket, full rump, looks old in the face, he is mature up

Thanks, everyone. It's the only pic i had of him...when I get another of him, I'll post it to compare.

Rattler03 - our place is in Caldwell County and I've been impressed with the deer around here. I know some folks who have shot some 160-170's in low fence areas nearby. Haven't seen one that big at our place, but I'm pleased with our local herd.

Nice, Caldwell county can be really good. I grew up in San Marcos, and I had some buddies that had family land down along the San Marcos river in both Caldwell and Guadalupe counties. They got some studs down there. One of the biggest bucks I've ever seen was a typical 12, every bit of 160", 3 miles downstream of Fentress. There were some other pretty nice ones on that property, and that was 12 years ago and I bet things have gotten even better down there since then. It wasn't all that long ago that there were hardly any deer in those parts.
