A friend suggested that some of you might enjoy seeing pictures of the gazebo I built to get married in at my pond. I dug the pond in 2006-2007 after clearing the land. It's 4 acres of surface water when full and I stocked it with large mouth bass, channel catfish, coppernose bluegill and fathead minnows. My wife and I go there all the time to take pictures, fish, swim, float on a raft and drink a few beers and just to relax and enjoy the setting. We call it our happy place.

After proposing to Karen at the pond, I started drawing some sketches of what I wanted it to look like. We spent about a week going over ideas and things to try and do with it. I'm a huge fan of working with the native cedars on my land and I've built a few gazebos already using them.

One of those things I found on my land was 20 concrete culverts just over 4 feet long. I got this idea that if I put them in the water while it was low, when it filled up I would have these planters out in the water all the way around the peninsula. So I measured it out and put them in every 12 feet right at the waters edge.

It was winter, so I had to deal with mud to get the footings dug and filled with concrete

Where I clear the land, I keep the oak for firewood and save the cedars for posts in things I want to build. I went through my stack and picked out the best ones for this project. I remove the bark, sand and shape them to fit, then installed each one after it was done. It takes a full day to sand one log.

I used my backhoe to carry them to the pads and get them plumb.

Then the framing started. This took awhile because I wanted to do some things I had never done before. The two biggest issues where making the roof round at the ends with open gables and creating the onion dome cupola. Things I have only seen pictures of

Eddie, you're quite the artist. You have a beautiful place too.

To get the decking to bend, I went with 1/4 inch OSB and put on two layers making sure the seams where not over each other. This was probably the hardest part of the project.

Since the logs are standing on top of concrete pads with channel iron holding them in place, I had to be sure to lock them into place with my railing. I came up with a design of welding 1 inch tubing in a diamond patter that stops the racking of the posts. Each railing is custom built for the space between the logs and the logs are cut and sanded to fit the railing.

For the soffit and ceiling I went with 1x6x8 cedar fence boards. They where the only wood that I could get that would bend to fit the inside angles and curves. The floor is flagstone and the inside corner brackets at the tops of posts are from King Metals.

My wife did the landscaping around it while I was working on the last minute details the day before the wedding. On our wedding day, it looked perfect!!!
