Jeez Louise, man I hate those things. 'Glad you got him. If it was me, I'd probably carry that rake anytime I was in the yard for the rest of my life.

Not sure if it is just the picture, but that looks like a very big one, especially for a water moccasin.

It's been many years, decades even, since I took herpetology at A&M, NewGulf. But judging by the photo, that looks to me to be a nonpoisonous Nerodia sps, and the aggressive behavior almost makes it a slam dunk. I'm putting my money on a diamond-backed water snake. And they will aggressively bite.

Back in college, I was helping a graduate student collect snakes in a Robertson County flood-prone area when I saw the tail of a snake disappear into a little pile of brush. I kicked the brush and the sucker came out in a flash and bit my pants leg. It was a water snake alright, but I thought I'd been bitten by a moccasin!

Water moccasins will bite too, of course, but they are far more shy than a Nerodia. FYI, the snakes that lay up on suspended limbs over the water and then occasionally fall into your boat are often Nerodia, at least in Texas anyway.

I was thinking water snake too. A little thinner bodied than cotton mouths I've seen.

Thinner bodied & longer tail. WM's are shorter & normally fatter than the DB water snakes. It's easy to tell the difference between the two by looking at the tail, color variations change but are often similar. I normally don't kill non venomous snakes, but I do kill DB water snakes around the homestead because I don't want one of those mean bass turds latching on to one of my little ones.

Yep, what I thought when I posted in his other thread in the OT. They sure have a nasty disposition.

Yes they do, meaner than water moccasins. I have had a water moccasin chase me back into my truck striking at me hissing but only after I wounded him and went after him to finish him off with a 22. Last DB water snake I saw was coiled up on the road on the way to work in front of my house....I stopped/got out to get a closer look at him and as soon as I walked up to him he struck at me and charged me like a bull roflmao
