My youngest son (15 years old) and I cleaned out one of my work trucks and than loaded it with gear and headed down from our home in Ontario to your great state to hunt hogs. We packed 2 crossbows, 4 rifles and 240 rounds of ammunition so that we would have lots of options. We left on Thursday March 12 and crossed at Sarnia at the south end of Lake Huron. Crossing with the rifles was pretty easy as I just declared the rifles handed them my form 6 import permit approved by ATF and they entered the permit into the computer and sent us on our way. We were never asked to show them anything.

We took 2 days and stopped in Azle Texas until Sunday to visit friends from another forum and participate in an Excalibur Crossbow festival called "Texfest." Festival was fun with good food, good people and lots of opportunity to tune our crossbows. I also won a new Tombstone case for my Matrix, some broad heads and two spare strings and needless to say we were the only foreigners at the festival.

Next stop was the gulf coast where we relaxed for 2 days and also toured the NASA Johnson Space Center south of Houston. When my son was 11 he entered a NASA contest to paint the future of space travel and won second place in his age group. His painting is on display at NASA so we wanted to see it. This is an image of the painting:

After the gulf we headed west to the hill country about 50 mile northwest of San Antonio. Here we met up with a family friend who arranged for us to hunt hog. We hunted for 2.5 days and did a combination of walk and stalk, baited feeders with blinds, and pushing. My son scored a nice boar on one of the pushes by shooting this beast while it was on the run at about 120 yards. He was shooting a .308 loaded with 165 grain accubonds. Hog ran about 50 yards further after the shot and tipped over dead.

Close up of cutters:

I managed to score this guy with the crossbow at 32 yards later the same day

We hit the road on Friday morning after packing the field dressed hogs in about 1000 lbs of ice in the box of the truck. Made it home Saturday night at 10:30 pm after driving 1893 miles in 2 days. Trip total mileage was just shy of 4300 miles. Crossing back into Canada was easy as well. We just told them where we had been, what we had, and showed them a copy of the ATF form and they waved us on our way and never asked to look at anything.

Hogs are at the butcher's thawing out so they can be processed. We arrived home Saturday night to temps of 0F and by Sunday morning they were pretty much froze solid. All and all it was a great holiday and one we will remember for a long time.

Wow, and I thought my 187 mile commute to hunt was a long one! You son will never, ever forget this trip. You did good, Dad.
