I have a small grove of about 10 of these trees in about a 30' diameter area. The tallest ones are around 30 ft. high. I have found out what they are. What do you think?

No, sorry. These trees are quite a bit taller than Flameleaf. And they should not be here in Bandera. Birds or something brought the seed here.

If I took a picture of our pecan tree leaves they would look just like that.

Prairie Flame Leaf Sumac can get to 30' tall.

It could be Shining Sumac as a search said it grows east of 35. I have never seen Shining Sumac that I know of though.
I would still say it is a Sumac of some sort.

Is the group of trees growing in an area were a brush pile was burned in the past?

leaves look the same as the 2 trees mentioned above, but judging from the the seeds (samaras, like maple seeds) I would have to agree with tree of heaven.

You don't have to get mad. The county agent said it was a White Ash. Maybe he don't know either.

So what you are saying is the county agent does not know his "ash" from any other tree? grin

Don, does the tree have an odor or "stink" to it? If so then it is the Tree of Heaven.

Quote:
All parts of the tree, especially the flowers, have a strong, offensive odor, which some have likened to peanuts or cashews.

I crushed the leaves. There is no smell other than regular leaf type smell.

Growing up we had either Arizona Ash or White Ash trees in our yard. The leaves on those trees looked nothing like the one you have pictures of. The bark was way different also on those trees in our yard that what you have. Do you have an NRCS agent in our town?

No, There is one in Hondo. This guy seems pretty sharp. Maybe he missed his calling and should have been selling time shares.

Take that pic by and show it to the NRCS guys next time you are in Hondo and see if they know or can find out for you. Steve Nelle retired from NRCS, I guarantee he can tell you what tree it is if he was still working for them in San Angelo.
