My article about the melanistic buck I took in 2016 was just published in "The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters" (May/June 2018).

A longer version was originally printed in the QMDA's "Quality Whitetails" last year. Here's the latest one:

If you want to read the longer story, you can check it out here:

Here's a bigger pic of the buck...

Thanks, everyone!

Here's a few shoulder mount shots. These were taken with my phone, so they are not the best for details. I was very pleased with the mount, though!

What county? We have had a few on our place in Hays and had one buck who was looking good but went ghost a few years back. Had a white one dead to rights when i was a kid but didn’t want o get in trouble for shooting an endangered species. He was a good 8 and I read up and learned I could of taken him. Never saw him again

Caldwell County - this was a rare sighting for us, but I have friends in Bastrop and Travis county that say they see them almost daily. There is a 8-10 county area in Central Texas that produces for melanistic deer than the rest of the US combined. Studies show that 20% of deer in that region are abnormally dark.

Never seen a piebald, albino or leucistic deer in person. That's cool you saw a white one! I think I would have been in your shoes as well as a kid.

We told friends and family that as soon as this one was confirmed to be 5.5, he was free to be taken, but not until then. He was elusive for years, and was never seen in person during hunting season until my buddy saw him the two nights before I got him. Definitely a trophy of a lifetime for me, and a story I will always remember with fondness and big smiles! smile

Caldwell county has some good area’s. Plum Creek has produced some good deer. Hays,Travis,Guadalupe and Caldwell are sleeper counties. If you can control the pressure and let them get age those area’s have some good deer.
