Saturday was one heck of a long tiring day. It started out at 4:30am and ended at 11PM. I was hunting around sand dunes in Lamb Co for Mule Deer. At 5am we had a strong cold front roll in with 25-40mph winds. I knew right away it was going to be a fun filled day with high winds and blowing sand. At least it would be much cooler. It was 85 when I got up there Friday to do some scouting. Temp went from 57 to 45 in a hurry. Didn't see many deer out during the morning. One young 3x3 early and another buck around 9am. Both were out in the cotton. Nothing else was moving due the high winds. I bedded the 9am buck in the cotton and came back that evening to check on him. Around 5pm he got up exactly where he had laid down. Got within 500 yards and saw he was another 3x3. To the east of this buck is a big bowl which has been known to hold deer. It's all in very deep cotton. I had glassed this bowl all day and never saw anything. About 5:20 or so I glassed it one more time and this big guy stood up. Ranged him and he was 473 yards out. I was stand next to the wheel of an irrigation pivot when I spotted him. The deep rut from the wheel made a perfect trail through the cotton towards the buck. Between me sneaking down this rut and the buck feeding on the cotton quartering slightly towards me I narrowed the distance to 263 yards. Close enough. Leveled the 300WM and put an Accubond in his left shoulder broadside. Big boy didn't go down but ran slightly towards me maybe 70 yards and stopped. He was broadside again and I put the 2nd AB in his shoulder. This time he went straight down. I had a hard time finding this deer due to the tall cotton. He covered two rows when he hit the ground. When I did find him both shots were perfect maybe 3" apart from one another. He is one old warrior. His face is all scarred up and had some puncture wounds from a previous battle with another buck. His horns were definitely on the way down and a 6x7. He weighed 228 field dressed. He may not have scored much but I don't really care about that. I was able to take an old regal animal that really has some neat characteristics. His brows and kickers are really neat. He is also the first MD I ever took on opening day. Things worked out great. My daughter broke her arm at school Friday afternoon when I was up in the PH. We are enjoying some daddy daughter time this week.

That's awesome.

I'd love to hunt that part of the state sometime. Can't imagine hunting in fields of high cotton.

Thanks, I flat love hunting high plains deer. Nothing compares to glassing from a distance and doing a spot and stalk. Tends to get the adrenaline flowing.
