Not a monster, nor my best mulie, but I was limited on time and couldn't pass up the opportunity. He isn't a young deer and it might be he needed to be culled. Spotted driving, got out, thought about free handing it, then turned and got my walking stick out of the back seat of the truck for a rest. He was still just staring at me at about 50. They ain't the brightest. I'm already looking forward to next year. There's bigger ones on this ranch.

(I cropped the picture 'cause my buddy isn't what you'd call a photographer and I have my eyes closed in both the pictures he took, so I look like more of a buffoon than normal.)

Congrats on a very nice MD buck.

I find it very interesting the white tail characteristics the racks carry in areas like where you are. When I say areas like I mean areas that are dominated by white tails for the most part with a few mule deer thrown in.

We have taken a few on our ranch as well that if you blocked out the face and ears in the pic and only showed the antlers, you would think they were a white tail. It makes sense to me because I've seen mule deer doe being chased by white tail bucks when they're rutting.

Sorry to ramble, again congrats on your buck. cheers

Thanks Marc. Earlier that day we'd hiked up to a ridge and seen a young mule deer buck back across the valley we'd just parked in. We hiked back down and did a stalk on the young guy just to see if there were others. Sure enough in a little swale we were crossing, just on the other side of an old cross fence, I see a buck's back at about 40 yards and I call a halt. He looked at me and I looked at him through the binocs for a few minutes. I kept going over in my head how those wide, low whitetail horns did not go with those dam ears! And his nose wasn't that black. (I'm tagged out on whitetail buck tags. Note to self: Save a WT buck tag for mule deer season.) Sure enough, he got tired of wondering and BOUNCED away with his mule deer azz, as I cussed myself.

Congrats Creekrunner. It's always fun to see unexpected animals. Hoping to see some on our place

A mule deer is on my list. I think I might actually go after one next year.
