I recently got my hands on a Canon 7D Mark II DSLR with a 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 lens (rented it from Lens Pro To Go) and had a great time with it capturing some shots around the ranch. Its the first time I have used something like this - I have the more compact mirrorless Sony Nex7 but it has its limitations. I really enjoyed the camera - it was pretty heavy! Thought I'd share some of my favorite images from that little exercise...

Lastly, it was a special thrill to get such a great photo of this guy. I would say this blue eland bull is our trophy animal of the season, but he scrubs up deep and is very difficult to find...on this morning Kevin radioed he had spotted him in the far corner of the ranch by chance, and so we quickly set off on foot and with some patience and in stealth mode he showed himself for a perfect photo before taking off. That is a rare opportunity and was pretty special. He is in outstanding shape and the photos simply don't do justice to his size.

I find I lose sharpness when I upload pics into photo bucket and then resize them to post here which is frustrating - but worth sharing anyways!

Greta photos! I didn't know you could "rent" a camera, go figure.

Looks like a target rich environment for a photographer. Nice shots.

Great job with the camera. Good focus on all. Off hand or tripod? Super job on the game. Like the sky lighted elk pictures. He looks King. cheers
Thanks

Thanks all - what a difference the big lens makes. Took all these free hand and often a very quick reactionary snap! I was especially pleased with the whitetail shots as that buck was off to the races at some distance - they came out way clearer than I hoped. Time to start saving up - great equipment sure spoils you.
