My better half has never really been interested in hunting. Out of nowhere this season she tells me she wants to shoot a buck (I think maybe because her little brother shot one and she wanted to show him up). We went to the range and after 30 minutes practicing with my 30.06 she was shooting excellent groups and I told her she was ready. We Went out to our lease in Morgan Mill and hunted 3 or 4 evenings in a row and were absolutely covered in deer but she didn't want to shoot a doe and all of the bucks we were seeing were too young. The next morning I went out by myself and sat in a tower stand overlooking a large field on the paluxy river. Bucks were running the field edges and rutting like crazy and I spotted a 4 year old 8 point that we had seen during bow season and nicknamed "G3" (Because his g3's are longer than his G2's). A nice 8 point with tall brow tines and G3's. An AWESOME FIRST BUCK. I videoed him raking a tree and making a scrape and sent Ashley a text with a clip of the video of him and said "look who's here this morning". She immediately responded and said "We are hunting this evening!" I took off work early and we made it to the lease by 4:30 p.m. We rushed to the tower stand spooking several deer on the way in. We hadn't been in the stand 5 minutes and a nice 3 year old buck with a 20 inch wide spread comes out about 200 yards behind us and I tell Ashley to practice holding the gun steady on him to see if she can get steady enough to make that shot because "G3" will likely be 200 yards away as well if he shows up. As we are sitting there with the gun out the back window practicing holding steady i notice movement out of the side of my eye, I turn and look and there is "G3". 50 yards and closing coming straight towards the tower stand. I immediately tell Ashley that it's G3 and to shoot him and by the time she gets the gun back in from the back window, gets turned around and puts gun out the side window "G3" is within 20 yards. He is so close to the tower stand that we cant even see him from seated position and ashley had to stand up and point the gun down to get a shot. I still can't believe he didn't hear us moving around and getting re situated. He makes it to 15 yards and Ashley pulls the trigger and drops him right there on the spot. The look on her face when she turned and screamed "I got him!" is the MOST excited I have EVER seen her. That feeling you can only get from dropping a big buck! Needless to say she is hooked now and is already wanting to plan our next hunting trip, I may have created a monster. Looks like I'm gonna have to be sharing my stands and deer with her now but i at least she won't complain about all the $ i want to spend on leases and corn and shoulder mounts! Just dropped her buck off at the Taxidermist on Sunday for her first shoulder mount. Congratulations to Ashley on her first buck and joining the world of hunting: Ashley and "G3" 11/7/14 Morgan Mill, TX Erath County

Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Morgan Mill is some good country! Congrats to your bride on a great buck (and for lett'n you tag along ) I know you're proud, My wife took her "one and only" buck last year...after more than 24 years of "watching". It is a special time when you are there for that rare occurrence
