Lots of talk about new rounds which are hot on the market...cough cough 6.5 creedmore..

Fell in love with a few faster, sexier rounds that spit bullets much faster.

After doing field testing and finding dead but not spectacularly killed animals with these other rounds, I took my old tried and true ruger out the other day for some stalking. Found a mid sized boar hog in a creek and gave him 130 grains of hornadys finest and 30 yards and a massive blood trail later found him piled up.

In 21 years of shooting this round ( and probably 75 animals killed) I’ve only had to shoot an animal twice on one occasion. It has never failed me on deer sized game ever and I’ve killed some big tough pigs ( albeit head shooting them) in several occasions.

Maybe O’Connor was on to something? I’ve never gotten to test it’s mettle on truly large game but for deer and pigs I’m convinced it ranks up with the fastest and flattest.

Could it be that the old timers were right? That a one gun guy is in fact the most deadly and the .270 fills the widest gap between varmints and elk?

Picked up a book In New Mexico by a author who claimed to have shot and guided 100’s of hunters to dead elk and stated a .270 was his favorite cartridge. Maybe he was correct?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I love the .270. Just look at my name. I’ve probably killed close to 100 deer with my .270 and only had 1 run. It went about 75 yards. I shoot hornady 140gr btsp and my Remington Sendero will group less than 1” all day. Sometimes I’ll carry a 25-06 or a 7 mag, but I always come back to my .270. Ol’ Jack knew what he was talking about

Most all of us just use other calibers here and there to play with..the 270 if used exclusively has nothing to be ashamed of. Jack did know what he was talking about and a guy can't go wrong with the .270 for any medium sized..and even larger game. I wouldn't feel a bit undergunned using one for elk sized animals either.
I shot my first deer with a .270 almost 60 yrs. ago !

Love my Winchester 70 .270, can’t tell you how many hogs, deer, coyotes, I have killed with it. I even shot my black bear with it in Canada. All round great gun for hunting in Texas.

Great hunting round, IMHO. With it, a .243 and a 30-06 in your safe, a person can safely and humanely take any animal in North America.

If given 1 gun to survive with it would be my .270. Killed a dozen elk or so, and a few over 400 yds, so many deer, antelope hogs, yotes etc.. So my wife asks why it sits in the closet and my response is always the same, "it's unfair to the animals". grin

Growing up, always heard and often read that .270 and .30/.06 were the two best calibers for TX whitetail hunting...Lots of grain options and easy to find and afford too..

They'll take down anything that walks on four legs in North America.

Hey, I'm a fan of the "270 Lite" which is commonly referred to as the 6.8 and average 71 pigs a year with it!

I bought my oldest son a Ruger 270 many years ago as his primary.

It’s been my primary deer cartridge for over 40 years. It’s a great round, but it’s not magic. There are a lot of rounds that will do the job just as well. .270, .30-06, .308, .280, 7mm of just about any stripe - they’re all great medium game rounds.

The .270 has been and will most likely remain my favorite hunting cartridge. It works for me in the part of Texas where I hunt.

I have used my .270 to kill 100's of whitetails, mule deer, hogs, predators, exotics here in Texas and Red Stag in New Zealand. It has yet to fail me shooting plain old 130 grain Remington Corelokts. I like that caliber so much that I own 2 rifles chambered in it.

The .270 is one of my favorite calibers for deer, whitetails and mule deer. I have killed hundreds deer with my Savage 110 that I purchased in 1965. I will admit that I am now hunting deer with a Ruger 6.5 Creedmoor FTW as the recoil is much less with the muzzlebreak but it does not kill the deer any deader.
Adios,
Gary

I have a Pre-64 Winchester Mod. 70 .270. It will do everything O'Conner said it would. My issue is the steel buttplate. It is NOT comfortable to shoot for an extended period. I am not going to have an aftermarket recoil pad installed because it will de-value the rifle.
Obviously, one shot with a .270 will get it done on whitetails; so will my new Savage Axis 6.5 Creedmoor. The black plastic stock is not nearly as pretty as the walnut on the Winchester, but my shoulder is a lot happier after a range session.

Love my FN Mauser in .270 with 140 grain Hornady bullets. But, I like my .25-06 and .300 WM just as much.

If any cartridge does what a person needs it to do, and they are happy with it, that is all that matters.

I have one as well. I've shot upwards of 20 deer with it since it was purchased and have yet to pull the trigger twice on a deer.

You do know they make slip-on recoil pads, right? Put it on, shoot it, take it off, save your shoulder.

Nothing wrong at all with a .270, my uncle killed probably 30 WT with a Model 70 and I used it for a few years too.
