I have applied for two of the draw hunts at the SP there. What is the success rate and where do you recommend to hunt if drawn.
Thank you in advance for any responses.

I have a friend who hunts the place adjoining the SP on the south side, he says very high number of WT and a bunch of axis from time to time, hogs too ...

There 5 blinds on S Llano Rvr SP last time I looked some years ago.
The SP is teeny tiny in total size...couple hundred acres is all it is.
Staff will place you in the blinds by a drawing or by a you you & you go this way to those blinds down that trail. S LLano Rvr is one of the hardest SP's in the System to get drawn for, becuase of the high success rates on both WTails and EXO's. I've got mid teens LP's in some categories that have hunts there almost every year and have NEVER been able to draw SLRSP. This SP is my Golden Fleece of a place to get drawn for before I die.
I did hunt the WMA, Walter Buck, behind the SP in '99, and should have done what I'm telling you to do and could have loaded the Suburban plumb full of Axis if I had not been gawking at 'em at almost full dark, instead of pulling the trigger on a big doe Axis and that was the last time I even got close to getting selected down there.
Learn to shoot straight and FAST, with being able to reaquire another target and fire ACCURATELY as if they were Zombies coming to releive you of your jewels. Sometimes there is that many critters to try and score on if you are one of the lucky ones. No long shots down there if I remember right either, under 100 yards and closer to 75 yards as I recall. i have two options for rifles, 30:30 or 30:06, sounds like the brush gun would be the best for that type of woodland and shooting with.

I'd take the 30-06 over a 30-30 all day long, but whichever you are most comfortable with shooting. I can't speak to the SP on shot distance...

Hunted Walter Buck twice. Once in the late 80's and again in the 90's. Once for archery deer and once for turkey. The deer hunt was good and I took a doe and a feral goat and one axis doe. (someone on the same hunt took a doe that field dressed 26 lbs !) The turkey hunt was unbelievable! Watching them fly down from the roost on the river was a once in a lifetime experience. Saw plenty of deer both times and a few axis during the turkey hunt. I haven't put in for it since then. You should have a great experience. As for firearms, either gun will work.

Walter Buck has not been offered as a Lottery Hunt in a very long time. Dunno why, but I'd put in for it if it ever came up again, based on the critters I saw. Really rough country, and really ought to be restricted to 4x4's only up on top of the ridges. Ron

Our place is about 5 miles as the crow flies from S Llano SP and Walter Buck. Very high axis and whitetail numbers. BIG axis bucks but I wouldn't hold out for one on a draw hunt. I believe that State Park has one of the highest number of turkeys in the state as well.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Dang that hunt begins on Halloween, wonder how many people are going to realize that who win and don't show up. Well ones with kids at least.

Yup on the biggest SP/WMA Turkey Roost in the state at SLRSP...acording to the biologists I taked to years ago at Walter Buck...and the SP Staff go out of their way to protect that roost area too.
Used to you could hunt 4 footed EXO critters with a shotgun during a Spring Turkey Lottery Hunt...not so much anymore last time I looked... Ron
