I strap mine to my pack(side pocket) unless I'm on a final stalk. I've had zero success wandering and jump shooting elk, and honestly I've seen two guys fall and bust wood stocks because they had no control of it slung over shoulder or in hand.

Two options that are semi-hands free so you can use treking poles. Kifaru gun bearer and new mystery ranch(just came out and I haven't used it).

With the gun bearer, A few rifles will put the scope in your arm pit but it's not to bad.

I don't mean to jump shoot. I have a pack with a gun carrier built in but not much else. i would like to be able to strap on rifle and shooting tripod while going to my glassing point, using treking poles. I guess i could use the tripod for treking pole.

Don't take jump shoot in a negative context, kind of came out wrong or harshly. You will like dedicated trekking poles better then using tripod.

What pack? Does it have a waist belt?

My solution. The rifle scabbard.

Sounds like mystery ranch or kifaru gun bearer are the way to go for you.

If your pack has any pals webbing you may be able to add a deep pocket from kifaru also.

Another option if your pack has the webbing:

that scabbard works great between shoulders/middle of the back, from a side attachment like you would on the elberstock X2 it gets floppy, it's also really tight with a 50mm scope.

Rex if you want to try it let me know, I have one I rigged up on a non elberstock pack that you can borrow. Doesn't look like you are far from me. I seldom use it

I've found it's easier to have a 13/14 year old kid tote it. Gun bearer yanno.

My Mystery Ranch Backpack showed up a couple of months ago, a year after I ordered it. I also ordered the rifle attachment but have yet to physically get it out of the packaging and put the rifle on it to see how it works. Maybe I will do that and post up a review. Just super lazy at this point though. sleep

I have an excuse. Just spent 10 days in British Columbia competing in a 7 day, 7 stage mountain bike race. 300kms, and 32,000 ft of climbing. Killing 2 birds with 1 stone: mountain biking & training for hunting season. Best shape I have ever been in. And British Columbia......holy crap - definitely going back to go hunting. It's like a miniature Southern New Zealand.

Now back to rifle slings and the like.............

Lol my pile hasn't been disturbed in 3 months. Every time I look at it I think of something else to do. Hoping it will all pack itself sometime before I leave for the Yukon in 3 weeks. I have no excuse.

So.....I decided to be productive today and pulled out my Mystery Ranch Metcalf pack and threw on the Quick Draw Rifle Sling attachment also made by Mystery Ranch. I was optimistic this would be the end all be all system. The sling itself is very well made and extremely comfortable on. The quick detach buckle is also very impressive and and extremely easy to operate.

What I don't like about the system however.
1. You don't necessarily have to use their rifle sling but you will have to detach the buckle on the sling that attaches to the quick detach system. There are no instructions on their website how to do so, however after watching a quick youtube video on it you can insert an allen wrench into the whole and the buckle slides off. This can then be attached to any other sling that has the webbing loops on it I would presume.
2. The hip belt attachment part that holds the stock against your waist should be one modular piece. The fact that there is a molded plastic piece that is then sewn onto the piece that mounts onto the waist belt leads to a lot of play and movement once the gun is inserted and you start walking. Also the location as to where it attaches is not very well designed. You can mount it as far back as you can on the hip belt where the hip belt meets the frame/bag. This is where it shows it should be mounted in the diagram. The good thing about this location is that the hip belt separates into two parts and provides a perfect place for the the buckle of the hip attachment to be hid and shield from sitting inside the hip belt and pressing into your body. The bad part about being this far back is that it is near impossible to reach that far back and dock/undock the rifle. And that was with a T-shirt and shorts on. If you move the hip belt attachment forward on the waist belt, it becomes easier now to dock/undock the rifle however now the buckle attachment for the hip belt attachment sits inside the waist belt directly against your body and will become uncomfortable and be a site for blisters once hiking. Poorly designed in my opinion.
3. The last thing I don't like about it is that unless you are walking in a straight line, on flat ground the upper part of the sing has a tendency to slide off your shoulder with ease and is not stabilized at all. When I think of having a backpack rifle sling, I want something that won't budge at all if I am climbing, leaning, off balanced..etc. This does not allow you to do this. I am very disappointed to be honest.

The sling attachment from Kuiu looks promising. It's upper shoulder attachment point braces the rifle barrel into the pack and should be a lot more sturdy while hiking/hunting. Kifaru's slink looks good also but the only problem is the Mystery Ranch pack doesn't have moly loops on the bottom or top of the pack. Not sure what to do now.

Thanks for the review.

I have tried almost all of them I think. I have not found one yet that doesn't have issues. The Crooked Horn one has the fewest issues of the ones I have tried - but it still has issues. I don't think you can find a pack-mounted rifle carrier sling that can solve the issue of some play/movement/interference when walking or climbing. IMO the ergonomics simply will not allow it.

Thus, I have gone the built-in scabbard route.

Yea, it's been a disappointing adventure to say the least. The Kuiu option I believe will provide the most stability when it comes to being firm on the pack and shoulder and not having a tendency to slide off your shoulder. But having the base mounted to the bottom of the bag instead of the waist belt is a poor design and will lead to bouncing of the rifle and excessive wear on the bottom of the bag. Kifaru does have their bottom sling mounted on the molly webbing of the waist belt which is the best design I have seen, however their upper shoulder piece attachment is not that sturdy in my opinion. I want the upper Kuiu piece and Kifarus bottom sling attachment and a pack that is compatible with both. Is that too much to ask for?

As you suggested, the built in scabbard is probably the most secure but I can't wrap my head around using one of those. Just not a fan.
