Off Season Topic:

Not including Big Bend and points far west, plus the panhandle, what would be the best county for both volume and variety of game (excluding birds)?

Just looking at our options out of Austin, we are open to anything up to a 5 hour drive.

Thanks in advance

For volume, especially whitetails, the counties just west of Austin are the most packed with whitetails in the state. Plus, if on a low fence place, escaped exotics wander through pretty regular. Pigs, unfortunately, too.

Welcome!

Add Kimble County to that list.

Kerr hands down. No other county comes close. Just look at the record books.

I'd toss Llano in the mix as well

I'd say kerr, kimble, mason and llano counties are definitely some of the best. great numbers, probably a little better antler quality than the more eastern hill country counties, lots of turkeys, many areas have healthy exotic populations, enough hogs, decent dove hunting, and a few of the most beautiful rivers for fishing, kayaking, etc. in the offseason. If you're willing to travel a little farther val verde and sutton counties are pretty good, too.

Kerr county without hesitation. I've never seen so many whitetail and axis and dove. The land I hunt has no hogs or turkey which I see as a downside, but for whitetail and axis over low fence - nothing compares in all the years I have hunted

I am hunting the wrong county then... I would says anything west of 35. This year i have taken a nice buck, dove, hogs, turkeys less than 2 hours from my house in my county. i don't judge a county by deer alone but if you do then Mason is hard to beat. Speaking German is a plus.
