At least we have private land to hunt here. Can you imagine being so crowded with hunters that this happens?

MASON COUNTY, MI – A hunter thought he bagged a buck on opening day of firearm season Tuesday, but instead he got bushwhacked.

That's what the 24-year-old man from Branch told sheriff's deputies who took an assault report around 10 a.m. Nov. 15, said Mason County Sheriff Kim C. Cole.

The hunter reported he was in his tree blind when he heard a gunshot and then saw a buck run past him, Cole said. He took a shot and the deer dropped.

"As he got out of the blind to lay claim to his prize, two men approached him and started yelling at him," Cole said.

The men's ire escalated into hurled obscenities before the fists came out, Cole said.

"They beat him up and they took his deer," the sheriff said.

The police report on the incident noted the alleged victim had noticeable facial injuries.

Good thing someone didn't get shot.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

Good Golly, I never hunt deer on public land in Michigan. The last time I tried on Beaver Island (real place) I got into position at 04:30 but had people within 50 yards by 05:15. I got up and whistled a loud tune and walked the hell out of there before I got shot.

Now I hunt on a farm in the northeast lower peninsula near Alpena. Big deer but no feeding allowed because of Bovine Tuberculosis.
