I just purchased some land in the Pandale/Comstock area, 5 miles from Pecos River. When does the rut kick in there. General observations on hunting that area.

They'll probably be rubbing, scraping, and sparring right now. The chasing gets good after Thanksgiving, with the peak usually the first week of December or so.

We usually see the most rutting activity the second week of December. The bucks get broken antlers pretty quick once it starts. The earlier in the season you can take your target buck, the better. I have had to let some pretty good deer walk because they had broke off one of their main beams. bang

General observation. If you drive in after dark like we usually end up doing coming from Austin you'll wish you could road hunt. 1024 will have deer all over it. My wife killed as many with the pickup as she did with a gun last year. 2 each.

We've seen some nice scrapes and over the last couple of weeks we've seen sparring on the cams.

Pandale/Comstock area is kind of between two sections when TPWD did a state wide chronology study for 3 years. These are the results that they got. The best I can tell is that you are in the area right between the western section of Edwards Plateau or the western section of South Texas Plains, as they have labeled it.

West Edwards looks pretty close, looking at the dates, but it could be between that and the Plains.

1024 is a road with tons of deer. I hit one in my truck the night before archery opener that did 4200 in damages. The other thing is lots of bear sightings in the Pandale area this year.

I hadn't heard about the bear sightings. Good to know, though.

OP, depending upon which way you come in, odds are you're going to see plenty of deer on the roads, so be careful. 1024 is packed with them. I noticed some sparring on the game cams over the past month. I've also noticed a couple of scrapes here and there. We haven't been out there in a week and a half, but two weekends ago the young bucks were still staying together for the most part while the older ones were starting to do their own thing on the cams. What everyone else has said about the rut is pretty spot-on from what I've observed. Last year it was a little early, but this year it's looking like it'll probably be late November/early December like usual.

Last year we had good rut activity the whole month of December.
