We just got drawn for a hunt in black gap WMA. Heard is a pretty cool place. Just looking for any info about the terrain, camping/RV spots, stories. Thanks.

They have a few camping spots at the HQ and the rest are dispersed throughout the property. I don't know how they deal with that on the drawn hunts though. We have only quail hunted there. Very rugged terrain and depending on the type of vehicle and camper you have, your spots may be limited. If you have two spare tires, take them both. The rocks can do a number on your tires. No water on site, so take plenty with you. You can get gas and limited supplies at Stillwell store a dozen or so miles from the front gate. Other than that you are limited to driving back to Marathon (60+ miles one way) or even further to Alpine. No cell reception anywhere close, so plan accordingly. It is an amazing place, but very unforgiving.

Hunted archery mule deer there in 2008. The compartment they gave us had a covered shelter in it that we camped at. No luck on the mule deer but had a great time. Good luck on your hunt.

Thanks for all the info. We were thinking about doing a little varmint hunting while there. Anybody done any varmint hunting in that part of the world? Looks good on the map jut I've never called a place like that. Thanks

I have seen a few yotes there in years past. They will warn you about not shooting any black bear you may see. Mountain lions roam the area but I have never even seen a track of bear or lion. I have always managed to find the Javelina but I'm not sure about calling them up.

I drew a gun mule deer tag there 6 years ago. It is a great place to hunt. Like it was said before, no cell service and gas and water are far away. I took a calling card with me and they let me use the phone at the office to call my wife. Enjoy the hunt and remote local.

This is a javelina hunt. I have heard good things about the population they have. I am looking forward to hunting a different place for different game. How was the mule deer hunting?

Took a 7 day 85 mile canoe trip down the Rio Grand a few years back, and the first 30 or so miles was along Black Gap. Saw quite a few deer along the river and it seemed like turkeys and javis were everywhere. It was almost impossible to sleep at night because of all the varmint noises. There were critters yelling, spitting, screaming and dying all night long. We finally wised up and started camping next to a rapid every night to drown out the sounds. Catfishing was excellent just below any set of rapids. Snakes were fairly numerous, but we only saw one rattler. Found one fresh set of mountain lion tracks. Beautiful country with lots of neat history.

mule deer was great. I shot a really big 2x2. In retrospect I should have held out for bigger but I had never hunted them before and was very happy with my deer. I tent camped and really had a great hunt. I was the only one in my compartment and only ran into people when I went to the check station. They had a few bighorn skulls behind the office that they had found over the years. It was cool to look at them and hold them. It was for sure a whole experience type hunt. I ended up coming up on a 170-180 inch mulie on the road by Marathon on my way home. No one for 20 miles in any direction. I pulled to within 20 feet of him and watched him for a few minutes. I was tempted to say the least but I want to tell my kids about that trip someday without lying about it.
