I know there are some serious tractor guys on here so I thought I could ask.
I am going to look at a tractor on Friday morning. It is a deutz-fahr agrotron m600. It has 1100 hours, loader and looks nice in the pictures. This is the first real sized tractor I have purchased. What do i need to check or look out for?
I am going to use it to plow/spray/plant food plots. Also clear brush and maintain roads.
Thanks guys

Look for leaks, any new looking parts, look for paint missing on any bolt heads (means it has had a wrench on it and someone has worked on it most painted bolts don't come off for routine maintenance)drive it and move EVERYTHING on it that will move, push every button and turn every switch, run it through all the gears make sure it shifts smoothly, and listen to it. Look at ALL the fluids to see how clean they are and what they smell like (if it smells burnt). Look and see how old the filters (oil, fuel, hyd, and especially air)are. Look the tires over pretty good(they ain't cheap). If it looks beat up it was. Just like a used car only with a lot more moving parts. If it's from a dealer check it twice! I am sure I forgot something but I bet someone will point out whatever it was! ;)Good luck!

I'm not a Tractor guy, but I do have some advice. Unlike auto's, tractors have a limited distribution channel. Even in the name brands specific lines within the brand may be manufactured by someone else completely. We have a Jap made Massey Ferguson that is now obsolete. The factory that made it was closed and no other company picked up the product line. So many replacement parts are used or manufactured custom by a machinist. If you buy a model that has been around for several years you will be guaranteed parts and service for years to come.

I'm no tractor guy either. However, if you are going to be operating it in Texas (or North America) I would look for indications of John Deere, kubota, or case somewhere on the tractor...
Seriously, not being a tractor guy, I googled the tractor and looked for dealers. They are strong in Australia, France and Quebec. I could be wrong...

I'd be real leery of buying a tractor that didn't have a dealer within a reasonable driving distance. Sooner or later something is going to break, and if my life is any indication, it'll break the day before you really really need it.

Several "grey" tractor forums are out there on the Internet where you can post questions and learn more. I once repaired a Hinomoto tractor that the owner was prepared to junk after using a forum to learn it was the same model as a Massey. Replaced the head gasket with a Massey part and she's still running today.

From their website, it looks like there are three dealers in TX, and a couple in Oklahoma. My first consideration in buying anything, is where will I get parts? If you are close enough to one of those dealers, then I would consider looking at it if the price is acceptable. Deutz makes a great diesel engine that is used by a variety of different brands. I have a 58hp one in my ditch witch trencher.
Look for abuse, leaks and slop. If it's been abused and overworked, it will show with that many hours. While that's not a lot of hours on a tractor, it's enough to indicate if it's had a rough life or not. Look at the fluids after running it. One trick a guy I know ran into buying a JD at auction was the seller closed of a dead cylinder by blocking the injector line with a BB so it would run smoother and not smoke. I've also heard of guys adding sawdust to the oil so you don't see it leaking. New paint is an indication of trying to hide something. Run it long enough to get it to full operating temperature. Hydraulic issues will sometimes be fine with a cold engine, but start to appear when the fluid warms up.
Before you buy, be sure to talk to some local dealers to see what they have to offer. There are used tractors for sale out there that will cost you the same as buying brand new. Some brands are offering really low interest rates and the payments are so attractive that it's better to keep your cash in the bank and pay monthly. I've bought new and used, my next tractor is going to be a brand new 80 hp 4x4 cab tractor. Probably TYM, but LG is also one that I'm keeping my eye on.

Look for a deutz-fahr dealer first. I carry parts for them but your a bit away from me... Great engines and tractors but you need to have a shop around that's use to working on them. If you have a good dealer network close then as long as the tractor is sound it should be a good buy. Looks close and not just for leaks.. look for serious leaks.. if you find a tractor that old that dosnt have a leak.. well your not going to but you get the picture.. look at the mains and be sure that's solid... fuel leaks are common.. and simple to fix. check the 3pnt, PTO, all hydraulics and put it up against something to be sure the tires will spin and the clutch isn't about to go out.

Thanks for the great help. I wouldn't have thought to look at a lot of what you guys mentioned.
The dealer that sold the tractor new is local and that is the main reason I am considering buying it.
I have a 28hp Kubota that is too small to do much with at my ranch. I am hoping this 140hp tractor hasn't been abused because I have been looking for a decent one for the past year or so.

Might not want to buy the first tractor you look at. Ride a few different ones and get educated at what to look for. I'm partial to the older ones that you have the pull rod to shutoff engine. Especially the fords 6610 7610 etc. I have both kinds.

The guy was selling all his farm equipment and leasing out all his properties. I got the tractor, 16ft chisel plow, 8ft brush hog, road boss road grader, the bucket with grapple and a bail spear and two cattle guards while I was there.
