Is it just me or are there others that find it hard to stomach seeing ear tags in WT that are for sale for hunting? I can see buying deer for your place and getting people to hunt them but at least remove the tag before you release them. Do I need to buy some popcorn for this?

I can see buying deer for your place and getting people to hunt them but at least remove the tag before you release them. Do I need to buy some popcorn for this? Yeah here we go again. I will throw the first grenade. If it has an ear tag it is livestock. Every "hunt" I have ever been on, no animals had ear tags. However I have had to kill livestock to end misery. I would not pay money to go kill livestock and call it hunting.

A taxidermist can fix that little ear tag hole, no problem.

I wouldn't either but what if you're hunting a low fence free range ranch and have HF escapees show up?

Yes. I made that unclear.
The livestock I have had to kill were injured cattle. I have never paid to hunt in a high fence. And especially have not paid to kill deer that do, or formerly had ear tags.

When you have to regulate over harvest of a resource....when you determine animal densities, sex ratios, age classes, when you supplement the natural browse, when you watch a deer grow year after year, when you attempt to control breeding.....you have livestock. Fence high or low is just a measure of your efficiency. The most domesticated deer I have ever seen is at a low fence state park, and they have draw hunts for youth. I've had mature bucks eat out of my hand.... and Ol'Don still has the ability to troll us both...rather easily I might add

I dont mind stepping up on the fence. Being that I have high and low fences in which I have clients for both. I truly see both sides, an have a appreciation for both. There is things I see right and wrong with both styles of hunting. I will say that when it comes to release bucks, I dont like the tags in. I will leave a tag in a paticular buck with really good genetics that I want to breed for several years. On my does I will leave the tags in, each color represents a year. After 5 years I cull that color out. Keeps me moving forward with what my goals are on production.
As far as calling them livestock, I can see how you can say that. No joke there is some high fence places that I really think give us a bad rep. Then there on the other hand I have been on some low fence places that were way worse than any high fence place. Stocking rates do have a purpose, and need to be utilized. I can say that I am very glad we have a choice. I am glad that I have the opportunities to be able to hunt both.

Yeah we've plowed this ground before. The "they're all livestock-even the tigers in India" is a great get-out-of-jail-free card.

There are crazy amounts of state mandated regulations for pen raised deer......those tags are probably one of them.
