I was mowing down a very over grown area on my place today and saw a few of these. Any idea what they are?

I think I finally put the correct thing in Google. I am pretty sure it is a Passion Flower Vine.

What we always called Maypops. Usually start Blooming in May and fruit is good august September time frame. The seed are covered in a membrane containing juicy material much like pomegranates and is good to eat, my Grand Mother just told us not to chew or swallow the seeds. have since found out they are high in anti-oxidants and good for you including circulation. For eating the fruit the skin on the fruit will turn yellowish when ripe

The "balls" look sort of like buffalo gourds, but the leaves are wrong for that gourd. Have you cut one open? What is inside? Is it like a melon or squash?
