Why would someone have a free standing section of game fence? One of our neighbors has about 5k acres and has a section of game fence along the county road that bisects his property. It doesn't fence anything in, it's just about a half mile straight run of fence. Been that way for years. What gives?

Protection from road hunting poachers perhaps?

Key words....."county road."

I've also seen it and know the landowner who did that.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Keeps people off. Folks on the way out to where we hunt have both sides of the road done and one of the county roads. There's a public boat ramp at the end of their property and folks will park in the ditch and walk (and old road bed) to go fish on the rocks along the highway bridge. They put it up when they select cut the timber about 10 years ago.

There is a mini storage in Caldwell that had the road side of the place with 8' chain link and topped with razor wire, pretty normal, except the fence stopped at each corner! It was like that for several years, finally did the sides and back not long ago. I laughed every time I drove by that place.

My in-laws had a ranch owner next to them (10,000 acre ranch) partially high fence a corner of their place to minimize deer movement onto my in-laws place property.

The in-laws had a feeder about a 100 yards from their property line with many of their bigger bucks coming from that large ranch.

The neighbors set-up game cams on their side pointing towards my in-laws feeder for several months which led to the high fence being built.

Maybe they are trying to train their deer to the high fence.

I have thought about this for our place. We ave three neighbors. 2 of them plus us have a good mix of planted fields and woods. Lots of Oaks. We arent pros but we all do our best to manage the habitat and do the improvements we can. However the one neighbor just has a big field. Doesnt plant any cover crop or anything. just has stands 150 yds of our fence and feeders 75 yards off our fence. Its well within their rights and Id probably do the same thing, but I have often wondered what would happen if we had a high fence on that one side.

No worries. A complete high fence cannot be achieved when a 200 yard wide canyon runs through your property line. The deer simply found their way around the ending of the fence and still came to the feeder trout

I would agree with the poaching thing except it's not that much fence. It's literally less than half a mile on one side of the CR that runs 4 miles through their place. They have goat wire on both sides of the CR and tying into the length of high fence.

2cents. Tis like de snow fences built up North... Can drive for miles without seeing fence... De-fence tis constructed in a funnel that draws de snow ta drift across heavely trafficated area... flag

Farmers across the road from a ranch I had in big lake cleared their 5,000 acres of all cover and always put a 40 acre wheat field on their side of the county road with a nice tower blind right across from my mesquite flats.

If I'd had enough stupid $ I would have high fenced the 4 miles of county road.

One of my buddies high fenced 2 sides of his property to prevent the deer from going over to a 150 acre day hunt operation that let the day hunters shoot whatever walked by. We were in town one day when 4 guys were bragging about the deer they had shot, Yep they were 10 point but they were 2 and 3 year old bucks. This didn't go over well with the guys on the lease so they got with the owner and high fenced that side off.
