I was drawn for an Alaska Muskox hunt. I can't believe it as the draw odds are pretty low. Has anyone gone? There are 2 options, using a guide or using a transportation service. Even though I do mostly diy hunts I'm leaning towards the guided hunt. Just hoping someone on the THF has gone and can make a recommendation.

That would be awesome. I'm with you. No sense in burning a good shot at a rare hunt. Go with a guide.

Hunt there at that time of the year, I would not hunt it without a guide. Go with their recommendations for clothing and equipment.

It appears they may suggest some white clothing for camo...looks a wee bit frigid.

Awesome!
Ive lived here in Alaska since 1987 and Never drawn one.
So Im headed to the Northwest Territories Canada next month.
I am guessing you drew Nunivak?...if so those trannsporters have it dialed in and get your ox.
Personally I would just use a transporter...but I have a LOT of experience here. If any doubts in your experience or abilities go guided. Its extreme!
Good Luck!!

It is on Nunivak Island. I can't believe I drew it either. When I received the draw results and it said successful I thought it would be for the Etolin island elk hunt. When I put in the code and found out it was for muskox I was shocked. was thinking Africa in spring of 17 but looks like it will Alaska again.

Get a guide. The hunt isn't difficult, but surviving the cold (-25 to -40F) is. I can recommend the Northern Outfitters Arctic Clothing System. I bought mine off EBay, since the outfit had only been worn once by the previous owner....who wore it on his own muskox hunt. Even used, the entire outfit still cost nearly $1000. A full face mask and polarized ski goggles are musts too. Be sure and take a spare face mask to wear while the first mask is thawing out inside your jacket (your breath ices up the mask in minutes).
