I was telling one of my lease pardners on the drive back from the lease about how as a kid I'd see coyote tails wired on the fences of ranches. I shot a yote several years ago and put it on the road fence at my place and somebody took it in about a week. Anybody else remember this tradition?

The rancher on our place wants every predator killed. Also wants as many coons killed as we can. I thought about tying the tails to our cabin fence and starting a friendly competition between us and the other pastures' hunters.

I was always told it was to help scare off the other yotes. Whether that's true or not, I have no idea.

I have seen tails on a fence before, I figured it was like a trophy wall. Same guy had big catfish heads hanging too.
We hang rattle snakes on the fence, it is supposed to make it rain. Appears to be working.

Never heard of hanging just the tails, but have seen plenty of yotes hanging from fences. The trapper at our place still does it.

Never heard of just tails. We always hung the whole thing on the fence. Wire the hind feet together and slip over a post. Haven't seen it done in quite a while around here.

In my work I cover most of the western half of the state. I see plenty of 'yotes that couldn't outrun the rancher's rifle.
On the lease I was on in Llano the landowner had a paragraph in the contract stating we would be required to have a firearm on our person or in the vehicle for the express intent of taking any and all feral hogs and coyotes. In the 22 years I was on that lease I only took about 10 'yotes. Others took more. As for the hogs, we dusted every one we saw.
We hung some up on the fence where the landowner could see them. The hogs usually ended up in the freezer.

Down in South Texas it was common to see the whole yote hanging on the fence years ago. Don't see them much anymore due the sheer numbers of yotes down here now I guess. Most just pile them up or leave them lay.

I've heard of them being hung on fences for other people to get when a bounty has been placed on them and the shooter doesn't care to take them in

Let PETA have a few dogs ripped apart in their front yard by yotes and see what they say.

There are catfish heads, out the gazoo, hanging on a fence just west of Rocksprings on 377.

Me too. Wire the hind feet together and hang on a post. Now the hogs chew them down though.

An elder relative of mine told me that sometimes ranchers paid bounties for shooting coyotes on their property and this was just the way the bounty was collected. Not sure if that has anything to do with the practice anymore. I doubt they are much of a deterrent.
