Ok I started this in the OT, needs to be here. I'm doing pot roast Saturday. I know all the "usual" ingredients

I'm looking for your grandmas "secret"
RE:

how do you use onion soup mix
Love Bill's idea about Turnips, just quarter and throw in??

I'll probably use the crock pot, big hunk of meat so it will feed me for a few days. confused2

the wife does this occasionally with potatoes, carrots and onions, puts about a 1/2 cup water in the bottom with a beef bullion cube. Might be plain jane but comes out good every time.

I know... I'm a weirdo when it comes to pot roast/roast. Me and everyone I know calls a big hunk of meat a "roast". Pot roast is said big hunk of meat cut into cubes and cooked in a gravy with onions.

Love it with onion soup mix up

It's hell eatin em live

OK,here is my secret ingredient although now it will no longer be secret. Instant coffee crystals. I add a heaping tablespoon towards the end. It really enhances the gravy. And no,the roast & stuff doesn't taste like coffee! food

grandmas secret: large heavy ENAMELED CAST-IRON DUTCH OVEN ,low and slow (under 200 degrees).
must have self-basting lid - like this one - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009HBK1E8/ref=psdc_289818_t3_B01839OPSM
Do one once, and you'll NEVER use the crock-pot again!
Another secret (with the above) is to do the meat ALONE first; 4 hrs +, with nothing but 2 or 3 large fresh onions and no added water.
(NOT soup mix- it can't caramelize naturally throughout the cooking process that way natural onion can).

Add the final vegetables (potatoes, carrots, greenbeans, etc) the last hour of cooking increased to 350 degrees.

Makes a phenomenal deer-roast too!

I use a huge roast cut out of a deer ham then put whatever you think you will like in it... I do potato's some whole some halved.. snap peas, green beans, corn, broccoli, carrots whole or cut... small whole onions and a few cut up green onions... will ad brown gravy and onion gravy mix... I open the bag put hot water in it and stir then pour it into the pot so I can cover the top of everything.. a bit of tonys and cracked black pepper... then set on low when I leave the house in the morning and I will be coming home to the best aroma there is along with dinner

cheers

Rub it with flour and whatever seasoning and sear it really well on all sides before you start cooking it.
