Headed from northeast MS to Bandera area for a hunt in November with some friends. We will most likely have to skirt around the Austin area, and San Antonio as well on the way out, and back too. I welcome any suggestions on things to see , and must stops to eat at !

We will be spending the week out there, if we tag out early we wanna roam the country side for a few days taking in the scenery

depending on where you will be coming from in MS, you might likely bypass (miss) Austin all together ... coming across on IH10 takes you directly from Houston to San Antonio and on west to Bandera.

too many things to list not knowing what your likes/dislikes are ... food types (good Mexican in SA, good BBQ all around Austin).

We will most likely enter TX on I 20 , cut across country and hit I 35 just north of Austin.

I saw Lockhart TX is not too far out of the way. Aren't there some great BBQ joints there.

As for types of food, we love it all, we are food connisuers ! Ha ! Love BBQ, a great steak, CFS , Mexican, Burgers.

When we travel we like to " Eat Local " and avoid chains !

Keep cutting across north of Austin to 281 and turn south, take FM 473 to Kendalia, FM3351 to Bergheim. Take a right on 46 and that will take you to Boerne, a left and a right zig-zag in Boerne and 46 will take you on into Bandera.

No legendary places to eat along the way, but it'll be easier on you driving. We were surprised about a week ago at how good a little Mexican place is on the end of the Valero building in Round Mountain (just before you get to Johnson City). Pedernales Brewery on the square in Johnson City is pretty good too. The Dodging Duck, Cibolo Brewery, and The Hungry Horse in Boerne are pretty good. Popos a few miles west on I10 from Boerne has a pretty good CFS, but it's a little out of your way.

Have a good hunt.

If on I-20 through Monroe, La, exit at Pecanland Mall on the east side of Monroe, get on the service road and go about half a mile to Copeland's. If you like red beans and rice, there is no better. The other food is good also.

Next up is Ruston, where I went to college. Downtown, right on the RR tracks, there's an Italian place that's quite good. A little further along, maybe 15 or 20 miles, on the north side of the road, is a La Fogata. Pretty good.

Shreveport has some decent places to eat, but I don't remember any right off of I-20.

I don't remember any decent places off of I-20 in east Texas. Plenty fast food, and one Outback in Longview.

if you take Creekrunner's route, you will likely cut across on hwy 29 from Georgetown to Burnet, about 1 1/2 block west of the hwy 29/281 intersection in Burnet is a little hometown hamburger joint called Bill's Burgers, Wings and Things, makes a great hamburger, fresh cut fries and onion rings. In Georgetown is a little BBQ trailer in a mobile food park called Full House BBQ, likely the best beef ribs I have eaten from a restaurant, brisket is good too. Lockhart might be the BBQ capital with several really good to decent places there, my favorite is Kreutz and Blacks in at second (likely the oldest family owned BBQ place in TX), the others I haven't been overly impressed the last few years.
