Looks like I'll be commuting from Palestine for a while to the Temple area hospitals to see what, if anything, can be done with an eye...and noticed a pile of cars in front of this place out in the country east of Temple on Hwy 53 both going into and back towards home in the middle of the day...must be sumthin good to eat going on Huh?
Need to find an easy in & out place to eat mid commute besides the Mickey D's in Marlin...which is OK but nuthin special as M D's go. My driver gets her P's all jammed up if she goes hungry and I can't drive with all the junk the Doc's are leaving in this rehab project they've agreed to take on.
Only wish I'd made the jump to Temple VA 5 years ago when we 1st looked at moving to Belton...I might still have something worth saving. Ron

Greens Meat Market is good stuff. Sausage and bacon are some of the best made.

http://www.greenssausagehouse.com/menu.html ... I've heard great things and my wife is going by there next week with a bunch of church friends from Georgetown. I'm sending a big cooler. They also have a bakery and cafe,

I agree with what everyone has said and would like to add their Kolaches are very good, especially the ham and cheese. Another place I'd highly recommend in that area is http://www.oscarstoretexas.com/

We stopped at Greens this afternoon about 3:30'ish after a very successful outcome at Scott & White...& got a call to set up the closing on the Texoma house in 3 days and spent too much time and focus looking for a way to not have to drive the 6 hour round trip from Palestine....settled for a couple sandwiches ... a BBQ and a Steak sammich and would order either of them again. Even though the hour was late for a lunch we had great prompt service, and killer fresh made to order beer batter onion rings...and spent too much time shopping the deli. The kolaches were about wiped out, but there were enough left to get a good sampling. Deli staff super easy to work with, knowledgeable about what this or that tastes like too. How can you look at mebbe 50-60 selections of jelly/jam and only pick a couple..both our choices are already winners in the ice tea spoon straight outta the jar taste test derby...it's THAT kinda place, and a little overwhelming on the 1'st walk thru
Checked out the meat case and realized we could not begin to sample everything from all the choices. The hard salami style sausage is way better than average, came away with 2 kinds of bacon, 2 kinds of smoked sausage rings, and some little breakfast porkers. Long distance Closing Doc problems, with a carpenter sched'd at 7am to start a kitchen demo in the morning are not helping with the focus on one thing at a time for sure.
IMO I can see that Greens is gonna be a place where it'll take some time to get where you know what you want when you walk in the the door...too many choices...and looks like no bad choices in the 9-10 selections of stuff we bought on a trial test run of the place....I already caught the BH hiding some of the kolaches too...but I snuck a peach & cream cheese'un past her. Dang good thing they are 2 hours away one way from the house...it'd be real easy to spend a car payment in this place in a heartbeat...and nuthin is over priced IMO. Watched a guy walk off with 6 or 8 of big 2lbs each hard salami's...and the deli lady sez she had a guy buy 10lbs of the little breakfast porkers earlier today...just smell even an uncooked one and you'll understand why. After eating a piece of the Lil Porker style breakfast sausage this morning, I can understand why someone would buy it in 10lb quantities.
I also bought a small tub of the leftover ends where the bacon had been hung during smoking, to use as a sampler...oh well ...the word great is redundant and does not do the description of the bacon justice ...PTL Greens is a 2 hour drive from my place. Ron

thanks for the review/write up!!! I already turned in my order for my wife to pick up, she told me to cut it down considerably, upon cutting back about 50%, she said cut it back some more ... I initially told her I just wanted one of everything to try ... she was okay with it until I sent her the link with all the choices. I might have to change up my order now after reading your review on the little porkers ... but what do I cut???

Next time you're down this way Wiley, stop by L&R in Belton, and pick up some of their sausage. It goes neck and neck with Green's sausage and I personally think it has a slight edge over Green's. Both are great places though.

L&R isn't all that far from TLP. Their sausage is good. Go back to 317 from TLP and head south on 317. Hang a left at the courthouse and go 2 blocks and then hang another left and L&R is on your left on the corner. I'd guess it is 8 miles or so from TLP. I find myself at L&R for lunch quite often bc there bbq sandwich is hard to beat and the price is nice too.
Green's is great. Next time you stop in, do yourself a favor and get a few of the jap/cheese snack sticks. You may want to get more than a few...Next time you stop to eat there, order a sausage burger. Best thing on the menu.
I live close and I find myself in there all too often.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

I've had a few deer processed at Green's. If you just get a basic cut it's in line with the rest of them price-wise and they do a very good job. If you get into their menu and start ordering smoked this and that, it can get pricey. The sausage burgers with a cold beer on their bar-side make for a great lunch. I usually get a few snack sticks for the road.

I may have to try Green's deer processing. I normally take mine to Miller's in Belton...talk about some good jap/cheese smoked deer sausage!
