For the first time in my life, I hauled a gyp to Dr. James Bell at Castroville, TX to have her surgically AI'ed to a dog that I hauled a female to in OK over 12 years ago. I study genetics like the guys in KY when trying to produce a winner for the Kentucky Derby, in my opinion, there is simply no substitute for great breeding.
I needed to come up with a male to breed my best females to and the males that I have are full brothers. Two years ago, I found "Yuma" in South Texas and when I say her pedigree, knew she was what I wanted to breed to a male that had died about five years ago. As luck would have it, this male was collected and stored at Dr. Bell's office. I made arrangements with the owners of the semen and Dr. Bell to haul the gyp down when the time was right.
Long story, short, Dr. Bell surgically inseminated Yuma last Friday morning and we were there with a camera to video for CARNIVORE. In visiting with Dr. Bell, I found that he surgically AI's approximately 500 females annually with a success rate of almost 100%. The litter size from these matings results in an average of 7.2 pups per litter. The largest litter ever produced was 22 and the oldest semen he is using was collected in 1973. (The semen we used last Friday was collected 8 years ago).
I was a little nervous about my chances of getting a live litter from an artificial insemination but after visiting with Dr. Bell, I like my chances. I will keep you posted.
Adios,
Gary

I've raised two litters in my life. My second was IA from a Pallidan bread stud. Got nine pups. All made great bird dogs.

Clear River Diamond Jim. My experience is that he brings good confirmation along with lots of drive and track speed. It seems that his offspring prefer cats over coon if given the choice.

Good luck with the pups, Gary. Looking forward to seeing them on the show one day.

Just returned from a great spring bear hunt in the Navajo Rez with good buddies, Calvin and Titus. Killed a great cinnamon boar with chipped and worn canines, should make a great rug.
Hunting with dogs is so much more of a hunt than sitting over bait. We were prepared to have to sneak up on the bear when the dogs were baying him as a big boar does not like to climb a tree. At times, I was within 15 steps of the bear when the dogs had him bayed on the ground.
Adios,
Gary

I was never worried until I climbed down on the same level with him and realized it was so thick that I would not be able to see the bear until he was within five steps should he decide to charge. It did not take me long to climb back up in attempt to get back over him. It was when I was making this move that the bear decided to climb. I am not sure if my presence spooked him or if the dogs got a little bolder when I dropped down on their level but once in the tree everything was easy. We were 390 yards below the truck and an elevation change of over 500 feet. It was 390 yards (by the Garmin Alpha) to a road below with an elevation change of approximately 100 feet. Steve and Calvin drug the bear and Tytus and I struggle out the top to the truck with the cameras. Going for from 2,000 feet elevation at Menard on Thursday to almost 9,000 the next morning is tough on an old man. That is why I tell guys to do this while you can for there will come a time for me in the not so distant future that I will not be able to make those climbs.
Adios,
Gary

Thanks, Bobby. When you want to try to line up a bear or lion hunt, give me a call, I might be able to save you a lot of money.

Too old and fat for that now Gary. Would love to see Lion country someday though.

Give me a holler and I will tell you where you can go in the Navajo Reservation to see the most beautiful scenery in the Southwestern USA. You will need a four wheel drive and the roads are not great but if dry, you won't get stuck. 17.5 million acres with huge elevation, rock and vegetation changes. Also Canyon De Chelley, second largest canyon in the USA but by far the prettiest. You can spend a week out there and not see all of it, of course the Navajo Nation is larger than the state of West VA.
Adios,
Gary

Yuma is showing. I could haul her to the vet and see how many puppies to expect but my wife convinced me that it makes no difference, we can't change anything. Since I have expended over $1,000 already, I think I will just sit back and wait.

Yuma had 11 pups, two still born and a little runt lived only a couple of days. She is left with 8 healthy pups and is the best mother that I have seen in my life. I made this cross in hopes of getting me a male that I can breed my females which are very closely related. Yuma blessed me with 7 females and one male. I am going to have to guard this little fellow more than normal which is not necessarily a good thing. It seems that when you have so much invested in one dog, that's the one that has all the problems.
Adios,
Gary
