I've always used hay or straw in the boxes but I'm thinking about switching to a mat.

Any suggestions on one that you've found to be best?

Hay or straw does fine in your kennel boxes, but you're usually putting wet dogs in your hunting boxes. I use something like this.

I use cedar chips or pine shavings.

My dogs are spoiled, I put old comforters in the box for them, I hunt in the panhandle

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

I used an old comforter in Cracker's kennel box this year.

I went to Harbor Freight and bought those new cheap moving blankets at their sidewalk sale that they have like every other weekend. I think I paid $4.99 a piece for them. Check their website. They pop up on the opening page.

Such as:
1. They only come in two sizes, neither of which fit my holes properly, even when cut.
2. The holes they have in them are large. A little too large for my liking. I'd rather have more, smaller holes.
3. The drainage is poor. There is no lift or raise between the mat the floor of the box, so though the water may not be sitting on the mat, it doesn't dry/air out very well. the box can stay muddy if one doesn't remove the mat immediately after getting home with a wet dog.

I'm going to try a mat from Natsmats.com and see how they compare.

For my terriers I use old bathroom rugs. Big dogs get moving blankets

Some dogs react to the rubber. Been there done that. I've had these,, http://natsmats.com/. But now I buy swimming pool decking. It's dirt cheap and you can cut to fit. It's not soft but the young dogs can't lift it to chew on it.
