Next male lab I get I'm naming "Twitch". It's hilarious to me to watch Buck twitch when I call random names on a mark to try and get him to break from the line, then as soon as he hears his name he's off like a rifle shot.

What are some funny/creative names that you've used or heard of for duck dogs? Call names or registered names.

I call the black lab across the street Snowball.

I like it... your signature pictures make me miss hunting good pointers over quail. I probably walked about 1,000,000 miles when I was a little kid following my grandpas dog's with a 20 ga. Remington 1100 youth model. I think he had about 6 pointers at one point in time... I'd have never killed a quail without those dogs but they made it easy. I don't think I've seen a covey of quail since our ranch caught fire about 10 years ago and burned up all the underbrush. It's grown back but the quail never returned.

There is a really nice Derby dog running that is kicking peoples teeth in. A female with a register name "She Was Perfect Thursday" call name is Larry.

Danny Farmer is running her right now but is not the owner. Came from the Northwest I believe. For some reason this name just cracks me up.

I think we can all relate to the "she was perfect Thursday" lol.

There's some really funny registered names that come to mind.

Some call me broccoli
Charlie's running weedeater

I'm sure there are great stories behind some of them.

That dog is certainly killing it. She places in damn near every derby she runs. Never seen her run but the record speaks for itself.

I saw her run two weeks ago at North Texas being held in Oklahoma at the Judd Little Ranch. My dog was entered into her first derby as it was a small stake. Got to the 3rd series before we had a mishap. Ole Larry smoked it all and it was impressive to watch. Most of the work was pretty sloppy from the other contestants even the other guys who placed. In the first series she was the only dog that didn't backside the long contrary memory mark.

I ran retriever trials for several years and had a registered kennel name with the AKC. All of my dogs were named after M.A.S.H. characters. I had:

(Kennel Name) Trapper John (Trapper)
(Kennel Name) Radar O'Reilly (Radar)
(Kennel Name) Allan Alda (Hawkeye)
(Kennel Name) Sherman Potter (Colonel) Never got to use that one.

I'm not very creative. My three now are Frank, Kate, and Lucy.
Past dogs I remember:
Jim
Donna
Lady
Buster
Roy LEE
Boudreaux
Sam
Andy
Rocky
Prince
Bugger
Bell
Turk
Butch
Irene
Rose
Pearl

Out of all of these Frank is the only lab. He's probably the smartest, understands English, and has lived the longest. He refuses to die and rallies every time I think it's time to put him down. He's a remnant of my time duck hunting when I lived in East Tx.
The rest are bird dogs. They were all good dogs or wouldn't have made the cut. The great ones were Boudreaux, Jim, Lady, and Turk. Kate is still a pup but I think she'll be great. You never know when you grab one out of a pile of pups.

Not a duck dog... but,

My current GSP came out of a sire named Buddy Lee. I had gone to pick up a 1 y/o dog at a kennel and the dog wasn’t what I was expecting. I asked the breeder if he had anything else around for sale and he said, “well, I have this 4 month old male out of an unproven breeding”… when I asked him what happened he said that a 13 month old male he had jumped a kennel fence to get to one of his bitches that was in heat and bred her. He chuckled and said “…yeah, first chance he got, I guess”. He also said he was selling them at a discount because he had no clue as to what they would be like but I looked at the pedigrees and both dogs had a great lines. So, long story short. I bought the pup.

His registered name is Buddy Lee’s First Chance. We call him “Chance”
Hand’s down the best natural bird dog I’ve ever owned. About all I had to teach him was to come back to me… he did everything else naturally. He's 13 now and still hunts around 15-20 days a season.

That's a good story and an even better name.

My neighbor across the street has a dog named "Bob Cook", because that was the name of the street they found him on.

I named my 2nd and by far my best lab ever Widgeon. I still think that is a great name for a duck dog.
