Probably getting my son his own dog for Christmas. Son is 7. Kinda thinking a beagle. Any reason that's a bad idea?
Know a good breeder?

Get him a Yorkie and he can hunt quail with you.

You might have to FF it.

But, it will always be ready to go.

I had two beagles growing up. Both where friendly dogs and as a kid I liked them. They were both impossible to keep in the yard. They would dig and climb out of the yard. They follow their nose and roll in anything dead. Sweet, good looking dogs. Just make sure you have a secure yard.

My BIL has a two year old Irish Terrier that is a really cool dog. She's about 30 lbs, hypoallergenic, non-shedding and has a great temperament.

Make sure you have a good fence. They are escape artists. They have big hearts and love people, but with that if left alone too long or ignored they will wail and cry and do everything to escape to go find you. That of course goes with just about any sporting dog, but Beagles are hounds so know they can be incredibly loud when put in that situation. Untrained and off leash in the woods, they will track and chase anything that runs. Including your neighbor's cats given the chance.

Wise decision. You would be the one bathing and chasing a beagle. I speak from experience.

I think that's a wise decision as well.

Are you wanting a smaller dog?
Inside dog?
Will this just be a family pet?
Set on a puppy?

Ever concider a rescue?

Personally I consider the Field bred Springer and Brittany to be the perfect size dog.
Have a look at the field bred English Cockers. I have been very impressed with several of these.

Field bred English Cocker about 30lb and an exceptional bird dog. Doubles as a very nice Duck dog also

Collie if you are not looking for a hunting dog. Obedient and easy to train. Will run through a wall for you.

I've heard a lot of good things about the field bred English Cockers.
As a kid my favorite dog was a Collie, but be ready to brush them often.

Kind of depends on what you want in the dog. If you're looking for a smaller dog to have around/inside the house for everyone to enjoy and not a hunting breed, I would take a look at an Italian Greyhound. Friends of ours have one and we watched it for a couple days while they were out of town and we had so much fun with that dog. It's a tiny version of a greyhound and can move like a lightning bolt.

I have 2 Field Bred Cockers and they are absolutely perfect for me. Inside the house, in the backyard or flushing and retrieving. Buster is a top notch dead bird finder. Working on him watching the birds this year. I did not lose a single downed dove this year. I got a sneakin' hunch they would be great in the pheasant field too.

Jim Vance in Teague, TX for the male, Buster. Penny came from North Carolina. Both are good but I orefer Buster. He can really chill out in the house. Penny is a bit hyper and real nosy. LOL

Jim Vance, Comanche Kennels cell is 903-388-1226. Give him a call. He has got some good dogs. He told me all the training Buster would need is to take him hunting. Other than a little obedience that is all I have done. He likes to retrieve so much he throws HIS tennis ball for himself off the couch and chases it jumps back on the couch and repeats that for about 10 times. Lays down and goes to sleep or jumps up in my lap and goes to sleep.

You won't go wrong with them. Their tail never stops wagging.

Here he is getting a fresh killed dove at about 10 weeks old.

Here's Penny's first try at 7 weeks old I think.

Just wondering why? This is not hunting dog the way I read it right?

I've known some field bred cockers to be quite the hand full.

If the other breeder doesn't have any in time for Christmas, John and his wife Diane Gates also breed them.

I think Joiner Kennels may have a litter, and they are in Texas.

In many cases ..Especially with pure bred dogs you will be getting a show bred dog. I have seen many cases of people who buy a hunting breed of dog and they get show stock that has had the hunt bred out of them. Yes SOME field bred dogs may be a bit rambunctious and that is sometimes the price of a fine hunting dog.
I suppose if you just want a turd factory that sits in you lap it won't matter.
